Meet Constantine Sekeris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Constantine Sekeris.

Constantine Sekeris

Hi Constantine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have art in my bloodline from my for fathers who sculpted and painted for churches back in the day in Greece from where I’m originally from…art runs in my family for generations…my grandfather would draw and paint for me to watch him and learn from when I was a baby… I then continued to draw and sketch as kid then got into comics when my family moved to the states… fast forward to high school, where I met a taught Bob Whintey, who took me under his wing and exposed me to all the master’s and I especially fell in love with Frazzetta and movie artist Drew Struzan… I took my skills to Art Center College of Design at the young age of 18 and graduated at 21 with a bachelor’s degree. I then attacked Practical Fx Studios to be a creature design/concept artist…I was fortunate to land a full-time job at Steve Johnson’s Edge Fx, where I had a home for a good part of 10 years as their lead Creature Designers working on many major films working with teams and art directing as well… I also worked at other Fx studios around that time, from Rick Baker to Stan Winstons, Spectral Motion, Ironhead Studios, and Quantum Creation FX. Ect… I left the Practical FX studios and started to freelance for all the major studios as a vendor and now have had the great opportunity to work with Marvel Vis Dev, Avatar Lightstorm with James Cameron and their team to also House of the Dragon seasons 1&2.ect… I’ve also published 2 books and working on my 3rd… I’m lucky to be doing what I love to do every day… I respect it and work hard to maintain art skills to a high level.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everything is hard at first… it was hard getting my foot in the door… hard work and persistence got me in at a time that was very difficult… once I got to working at an FX studio, I’ve been a sponge and learning from major talents about creature design and costume concept artists; the main struggle at the beginning was learning the materials and process of how things get made to now having things in VFX and mixing the 2 mediums together. To create magic. Another struggle for me was adapting to a 3d program since all I did for many years was traditional illustrations… now I use both at my disposal when producing design work for films…I’m lucky I can present both sketches and 3d models.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Creature Design/Character Design/Visual Development for films… what helps set me apart is my knowledge of how I mix mediums from Practical FX and VFX and how things r built to accommodate budget and function at the same time… I’m most proud of my werewolf design in Cabin in the woods, as I am a big werewolf fan… I am also proud of the dragons I helped design in House of the Dragons and Marvel: Kang the Conqueror from Antman and the Wasp Quantaminia, Adam Warlock from Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Valkyrie from Thor Ragnarok, Wonder Woman from Superman V Batman,… Paykan from Avatar Way of the Water… Sanke Eyes from Gi Joe Retaliation, Hyde from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Beast from Xmen 3. to name some.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I actually still research from my physical book collection, which I have gathered throughout the years, and I also look at Google to research from life as well. I constantly look at master’s for inspiration as well.
