Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Conway.
Connie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Photography has always been a passion. It’s a way for me to capture moments I inherently see as photographic. My path to photography started in South Jersey where I grew up. For my fifth Christmas, my big present was a Polaroid Land Camera. I‘ve been making photographs ever since. It’s what I love to do!
I moved from New Jersey to California and attended Orange Coast College which provided the perfect curriculum for my career goals. It was a school celebrated for its photography program, and I had the good fortune to study under John Upton, a premier photography historian.
Training is often the catalyst for other related opportunities. Early in my career, I started producing photo shoots for People and Life Magazines, which lead to an opportunity to produce for the Grammy Awards. I now have my own production company and produce shoots for advertising photographers from around the world!
My current project, LA After SUNSET – is a series of images that capture the beauty and essence of Los Angeles’ dramatic transformation at SUNSET. Each image is an illumination of the oddities of the respective landscape – both physical and societal. The end result? Powerful images which evoke a unique combination of the gritty reality and ethereal make-believe of Los Angeles.
The series came to light in July of 2009. I was heading to my car after leaving a small club in DTLA. As I approached the corner of 2nd & Hill, I came across an incredible of the Walt Disney Hall and 2nd Street Tunnel. It was sunset and backdrop was literally glowing. Two weeks later, I returned with a couple of friends and made the image “2nd & Hill, Los Angeles.” The sudden arrival of skateboarders made a great photo even better.
I’ve stood on 87 corners, alley & bridges making photographs of L.A. After SUNSET. With a famously storied past, the “City of Angels” comes to life at SUNSET. Tremendous energy is evoked in the light and movement – as if the city is trying to reveal its deepest darkest secrets. This is L.A. After SUNSET…expect the unexpected.
