Meet Colleen Cabral and Marissa Rey of Future Soul in San Bernardino/ Inland Empire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Cabral and Marissa Rey.

We started as a couple of friends meeting up every Friday evening for our weekly “Aux Sesh” where we would jam out and share 30 minutes of our playlist. We played music inspired by Soulection, SoundCloud artists, and Majestic Casual.
Our friend Lorenzo was the catalyst who motivated us to build Future Soul with the account that he had made on YouTube. He had one uploaded mix on this channel that included R&B, soul, electronic sounds, and lo-fi beats. As a producer, he wanted us to promote his music. We thought of the larger picture – to showcase upcoming artists in our cities, San Bernardino and throughout the Inland Empire. After realizing that we could create a platform for alternative sound, we decided to pursue Future Soul.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our first obstacle was in combating the negative stereotype of hip-hop. We wanted to change the perspective of the music and art scene here in San Bernardino; however, we encountered people who didn’t quite understand the vision we intended to grow.

To attract an authentic crowd, we looked for conscious and genuine artists who care about showcasing who they are; thus, we connected our growing community to what Future Soul is today.

Future Soul – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Future Soul is a conscious music and art start-up co-founded by two women, Marissa Rey and Colleen Cabral. From creating over ten shows across the Inland Empire, Future Soul designs a welcoming environment for everyone seeking a deeper connection to alternative sound and visual art. We aim to enhance our experiences through each project we create by collaborating with new talent, filming creative content, shooting unique fashion, and ultimately creating art of the spirit.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We define success by the impact we make on others. We look forward to the natural high that comes from wrapping up a Soul Sesh or completing an art project. When our community sends us positive feedback, shares our content, and engages with our work, we know our talents and abilities have successfully served others.

Additionally, we value the opportunities to collaborate with musicians and artists who are on the rise and looking to expand their creative direction. The more we create, the more collaborations we attract (podcasts, interviews, event opportunities, media projects, etc.)

Most importantly, our team is the largest part of our success and we are forever grateful for their support. The stronger our bond is, the closer we become to achieving our collective dreams.
