Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Logan.
Hi Colin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Logan Bros. Shaving Co. was established in Aliso Viejo, CA as a barber shop & shaving saloon in 2010. In 2016 on the corner of Oak Street & Coast Hwy, Logan Bros. Laguna Beach was opened. Growing up in South Laguna Beach threw the 80’s, it was a very cool experience to open up a shop on the corner shared with local establishments I grew up patronizing, including Laguna Surf & Spot, Gina’s Pizza & Wahoo’s Fish Tacos.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Small business start-ups & being an entrepreneur certainly takes the type of individuals that have resilience. I have worked for and owned apparel companies, construction companies, and property preservation companies. Logan Bros. Shaving Co. was no easy task to start & finding that first barber that was very skilled with a straight razor proved far more difficult than anyone would imagine. Much of Logan Bros. success can be credited to that individual that has been around since 2010, Master Barber Marquis Colvin. We have built a community with our shops with a loyal customer base that appreciates quality & the comradery found in a small local shop. The creation of our own men’s grooming products may have well been starting an entirely new company with its own set of challenges. Of course, problem-solving & pushing ahead is always worth it in the end, you win or you learn.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A quick story about the beginnings of Logan Bros. Shaving Co. One Christmas eve sitting with 3 of my brothers & a few other family & friends in the empty first-floor storefront that would become the first barber shop location, we were laughing having a drink & carrying on when a passerby stopped & asked, “What’s this place going to be?” Not yet knowing what the future held, one of my brothers said, “It’s Logan Bros. Social Club, come on in & have a drink!” Little did the stranger know this was a reference to a club that our grandfather, Bobby Logan, had created in the 60’s in the South Bay called The International Social Club thru his travel agency, called Siyor Agent! (get it?)
Our grandparents were Scottish immigrants that came to Manhattan Beach in the 1950s. Being industrious, street-wise & hard-working, Bobby figured out that if you were a bonafide club, you could avoid the airline taxes from LAX to Great Britain. He would throw parties & mixers, raffling appliances & selling tickets to England, Ireland & Scotland to the club members while chartering American Airlines flights. If you flew home in that era and you were from the South Bay, you knew the name Bobby Logan.
Creating a nostalgic feel in our shops is an ode to the days of men having sanctuaries to meet and bond. Days when men had grit, honor, respect, and felt a sense of duty. At Logan Bros. Shaving Co. we appreciate the craftsmanship that went into our 100+-year-old nickel-plated barber chairs & hand carved oak barber back bar. We believe in a handshake & a man’s word. We offer a complimentary drink to all our patrons & we are proud at the community we have built.
When American Airlines filed bankruptcy & The International Social Club had an entire summer of flights chartered & tickets sold, our grandfather stood out front & handed back every ticket holder’s money that showed up, with no obligation to do so, to the possible tune of a million dollars.
We honor that story with one of our slogans at Logan Bros. “Grooming young men to become Gentlemen.”
