Meet Coach Cherry of Cherry & Co in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Coach Cherry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began dancing when I was two years old and had dreams of joining Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York. I was in love with ballet and that my goal was to be a ballerina. In college, I came out to LA to visit a friend and decided that I wanted to start doing hip hop and commercial work. So I left college after two years and moved to LA. My first year in LA, I was under the direction of Debbie Allen and toured and trained with her. I realized I wasn’t getting that many jobs as a dancer until I started dancing for artist, DaniLeigh. Our relationship grew and we worked so well together I became her choreographer. That was when everything took off for me. Choreographing was exactly what I was supposed to be doing. I’ve had the opportunity to choreograph for some well-known artists, as well as movement coach for them.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I definitely struggled in the beginning with my confidence. I see dancers and choreographers online dancing full out and how everybody loved their work. But I realized nobody moves like me and that is my power. I had to fall in love with myself and that changed my career tremendously. When my confidence strengthened, more jobs started to fall into place too.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cherry & Co – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company Cherry & Co is a private entertainment agency. I have six dancers called the Cool Kids, a photographer, a trainer and an event called CherryPOP signed. I operate as an agency, providing jobs for my clients and also holding private workshops and classes for them. I love my company because it’s selective. I have a personal relationship with each client, and I make sure everyone is comfortable communicating their goals and aspirations with me. I’ve seen how easy it is to get lost in a large agency and finding time to talk to your agents can be difficult. I make sure to have weekly meetings, not just about work, but also to be like a big sister to my clients.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently in the process of becoming a talk show host, so in the future, I’m excited for that to come into fruition. I also would really love to win a VMA for choreography. But I don’t really plan because I’ve learned time and time again that God is in control and anything I “plan” for, He provides much more. So I’m looking forward to seeing what He has in store for me next.
