Meet Christopher Lin of Lin and Jirsa Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Lin.

To the shock of family and friends, Justin Lin, Chris Lin and Pye Jirsa left the stable world of public accounting in 2008 to pursue their creative and entrepreneurial dreams during one of the most prolific economic recessions since the great depression.

They ended up building one of the most well-known and sought-after wedding photography brands in the nation.

Chris – we’d love to hear more about your story and how it all got started.

We started as a web design company but quickly fell in love with the world of photography and running a photography business. With almost no photo gear, experience, or technical knowledge we began our journey, making plenty of mistakes along the way but growing with each and every shoot.

About a year in, we found our unique style, and we’ve continued refining and evolving it ever since.

Today, Lin and Jirsa Photography has a team of over 50 creatives, shooting over 1000 client commissions per year, including boutique weddings, family portraits, and commercial shoots.

We’ve been recognized by Profoto in their exclusive “Legends of Light” program, and we’ve been recognized as a “Top 100 Wedding Photographer in the US” by Brandsmash.

Our team works tirelessly, both on and off of our shoots, because we stand behind a core philosophy, to love our clients and create imagery that matters.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it was definitely not a smooth road. Struggles along the way include the following:

– Booking our first clients in years 1 and 2 with a small portfolio, no studio space, no brand recognition, and no accolades.

– Discovering our roles in our partnerships

– Discovering our niche and focus

– Finding our unique style among the hundreds of other photographers in our area.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lin and Jirsa Photography – what should we know?
Our company slogan is “Where words fail, our imagery speaks.”

Lin and Jirsa’s style of wedding photography and cinema are deeply rooted in photojournalism, influenced by fine-art and fashion photography. The result is creative, clean and crisp wedding photography and cinema that’s romantic, fun, and emotional.

If you were to ask clients and industry vendors, we are likely known for our “Epic” imagery, also known as “environmental portraiture.” These are typically wide-angle, high-impact, vibrant images that capture grandeur and beauty in a scene.

While this is what initially attracts many to our work, we also ensure that we capture a complete set of imagery that includes editorial family portraiture, detailed venue and decor photos, soft and romantic portraiture of the couple, and of course, candid, photojournalistic moments capturing the emotions of the day.

On the cinema side, we are known for our emotional, tasteful, and timeless storytelling. Throughout the entire client process, our goal is to understand a couple’s relationship, what makes them unique, what makes them want to spend their lives together. It’s then our job to tell their story.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important characteristic is having a love for what you do. Being in love with what you do is NOT just being in love with the results, i.e. the praise, the recognition, the success. But it’s also being in love with the process of getting there. These are the less glamorous aspects of the job, like studying, practicing… and yes… failing from time to time.

It’s also important to surround yourself with the right team that pushes you to do better, to do more, and to never settle for mediocrity.
