Meet Christopher Cox of Brookland Partners Finance and Insurance services in Westwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Cox.

Christopher , can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m from Brooklyn, NY’ growing up in a city like that you see and go through a lot its not easy so you have this strong feeling of determination to make change. Change to the places and people around you. I grew up with a loving family that has always been strong support system. I went to Delaware State University where I graduated with a degree in Finance and Banking. During my years at the university I formed a organization called Future Leaders in Progress and our purpose was to give students essential skills (networking, business, management etc) they will need in the next stages of life. I was always intrigued with numbers and math so finance was natural through my college years, but I never knew what road I wanted to take until I took a course my senior year focused on financial planning and a light just went off in my head, it was no question that I found my purpose.

After graduating I landed my first career position as a Financial Rep at Vanguard, which was fun I learned the basic foundation of thew market and how to invest. Two years into my career I decided to take an offer in Los angeles at Merrill Lynch, here I begin to use my knowledge and started to build meaningful long lasting relationships. After going full circle in the industry I started a full service financial firm “Brookland Partners Financial and Insurance Services” with my partner and close friend Isaac Richard who is a big asset to the firm. I became a Financial Advisor because of how i grew up I came from poverty it was hard growing up, I also seen how they don’t teach basic financial principals in schools so I wanted to change that and have a positive impact on others since I’ve been blessed with the knowledge I feel like my purpose is to give it away and make a difference in someones life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

I don’t think nothing comes easy if you want to be great at it. It has been a journey but I love the process and what its making of me to become successful, I enjoy the challenge of getting up and chasing my dreams everyday. I think my biggest challenge was having the confidence, I was so use to job security that when it was time for me to take the independent jump I was type hesitent. I really looked at it as a leap of faith you have to sacrifice to get where you want to be and coming from where I’m from I had to escape a lot like jail and the system, drugs, racism and violence. Another big obstacle of mine was getting out of my comfort zone and planting my seeds in rich soil.

Staying focused takes a lot because its alot that can distract you and drag you in the wrong direction, so just having that level of focus it takes to reach your goals which isn’t easy but its worth learning. Staying patient and persistent turns struggles into success stories.
