Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Aguirre.
Christopher, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have always been into performing growing up. My mother and I would dance salsa together, jam out to Shakira in the car, and music stayed consistent in our life. For the longest time, I wanted to be a singer. I would go on auditions and always tried to be the next big thing. I stopped pursuing that career in my freshman year of high school started to notice a shift from singing to dancing. I did not want to take PE, so I took dance instead, as well as show choir. This decision was the beginning of a new career for me. Since then, dance has played a significant role in my life. I started to feel so empowered and just wanted to learn more and more. I started to train at Millennium and was taking ten classes a week to level up. I would finish school, take the bus to Millenium, and have my mom pick me up from the studio. Flash forward four years and dance is currently my life. My confidence grew exponentially, I found myself, and it’s my passion. I got to experience and meet new people through dance and it’s been so amazing, to say the least. Some key moments that happened to me was that I got to teach students with Down Syndrome how to dance, got to dance on stage with J Balvin, and got to travel around the nation. I currently attend UCLA as a Dance major, assist a well-known choreographer named Samantha Long, and get to create my own choreography to the public. If it wasn’t for the Dance and Show Choir Program at Burbank High School, I would not be where I am today. I encourage everyone to take at least ONE dance class. You won’t regret it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing comes easy. It’s all a learning experience. The hardest thing for me was not letting ego get in the way. Often times, I caught myself stopping and thinking I was the “best”—I am not. There is always room for improvement and that goes for anything in life. There will always be people ahead of you and all we can do is work to better ourselves. Dance has taught me the true definition of commitment, hard work, responsibility, integrity, and time-management.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a dancer in LA and currently attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I am a First-Gen and first-year student double-majoring in Dance and Communications. Aside from dancing, I am a Media Specialist at UCLA and work for UCLA Housing’s Media Team. It has been an incredible first year, to say the least. I get to integrate all my skills into all passions. I currently upload on social media platforms and have received credits from artists such as Shakira, Tinashe, JBalvin, Ciara, and many more. The power of social media astonishes me. I am always doing something and love getting involved in things I love. My colleagues and family have always said that my work ethic, time-management, passion, and energy is what makes everything possible.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is simple yet so powerful. My mother is my best friend before anything. She knows me better than I know me haha. With that being said, my mother and I would always get doughnuts, our strawberry-banana smoothies, and drive on the freeway blasting our favorite jams. They consisted of Shakira, Salsa hits, Nicki Minaj, and any tune we were feeling. This was followed by deep talks and jokes. This tradition my mom and I did is a representation of the relationship we have—true and honest.
