Meet Christina Owens of SunLuver Spray Tan in Playa Vista

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Owens.

Christina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started off in the financial industry and slowly backed away when I became a mom. After being a stay at home mom for seven years and having 3 kids, I decided that I wanted to do something I could grow into. I also wanted the flexibility to work around my kid’s schedule and be as present as possible while raising them. After researching and looking into my interests, I remembered my first experience with spray tanning. It was for my wedding in the summer of 2011. Although I have tan skin I wanted a bronze and even glow, but didn’t want to expose my skin to UV rays. I had tanned in a booth before and hated how my skin felt afterward. My now, Mother-in-Law, suggested I spray tan. She is a beautiful darker melanated woman who had been spray tanning to even out a scar on her leg. I decided to try spray tanning and loved the outcome. Now, almost 10 years later I realized a lot of women who are like me and tan easy don’t see the need to spray tan. And I want to change that.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Fortunately I’ve had the privilege to be able to find out what my calling is and what makes me happy. My husband is so supportive of my ideas and goals. So when I decided that I wanted to start a spray business he thought it was a great idea. However, due to COVID 19 business has been impacted. My launch date has been pushed back. I am also in no rush to put myself or clients in a position to feel unsafe. I am currently looking to take online courses for sterilizing beauty spaces and just make sure I leave no stone unturned in dealing with the new normal. This will be growing pains for everyone. It is a marathon and not a race.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SunLuver Spray Tan – what should we know?
SunLuver Spray Tan is a mobile spray tanning company that services the west side beach cities of LA. I am proud to use Aloe and natural based spray solutions, free of Parabens and Ethanol. I am always looking to see how to make each tan specific to each client. I also cater to darker skin and want to help educate that although it’s easier for BIPOC’s skin to tan, UV is still harmful. A good spray tan can give your skin an extra boost no matter the hue. I offer add-ons like scented solutions and after spray dry body powder for no extra charge. They are optional. I am also proud to be 1 of the few Black mobile spray tanning business owners.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that client service is key. Asking questions and being able to have an open dialogue between my client and I is important. I am providing a service and when a client chooses me while investing in their personal skincare, I take that as a big deal.
