Meet Christina Cessna of Martinez Samuel Salon in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Cessna.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Kansas City, my mom and dad have a salon in Kansas but also there was always a salon in our basement where I would always pretend to be a hairstylist. I moved to LA at 18 and studied to be in the hair industry. I assisted some of the most talented hairstylists and to this day, I still educate myself with the newest trends and hair colors.

Being in LA has given me access to the best products and education. I have worked on many shows and fashion shows throughout my career. I have worked with celebrities such as Karlie Kloss, Glenn Close, Ellen Degeneres, to name a few. I have had many write up’s in numerous magazines such as Elle, Us Weekly, Glamour and Jane. I have loved seeing how hair color throughout the years has become so much more natural and less toxic. One of my favorite things is to see how a hair color can transform a client’s look and integrity of their hair!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Overall, it has been a smooth road. When I was first starting out, color wasn’t as good as it is now. It was all trial and error. Along the way, you learn you have to get ALL the history of your client’s hair. If your client is not honest about previous color then you will have a mess on your hands. I have never had a color I couldn’t fix except one time when a client came in with all fragile, broken hair.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work with many color lines. I love redken and L’Oréal. Inoa (L’Oréal) is ammonia free and has no burning or itching factors. Redken color is also beautiful and no other toners are like shades EQ. I was known for all the blondes that I do. I really feel like I have mastered the perfect, natural blonde, however, I have now become obsessed with the dimensional color you can achieve on brunettes and reds! I will have to say I think at this point, I have a really good idea how color works and can always predict the outcome. I love natural-looking hair color, I’m not the colorist to come to if you want the “unnatural look”.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I wanted to be a dancer or an artist of some sort and actually moved to LA to have more opportunities. When I moved here, I quickly realized that I wanted to do hair because it was what I knew best from growing up around it. I also loved the opportunity of a hairstylist in LA. It was making fine art with a head of hair!
