Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Beckman.
Christian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been interested in art and started drawing at a young age. I graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in graphic art in 1995 and shortly thereafter moved to Los Angeles to get into the movie business. I started out doing any kind of work available just to be around costume and makeup effects. Within a short time, I moved up the ladder into management and was a project producer for Steve Johnson’s Edge FX. When that business closed in 2005, I decided to open my own special effects company, Quantum Creation FX, Inc. Within a few years of opening Quantum – my company landed costume work on large profile movies such as Watchmen and TRON Legacy. I am very proud that my company was able to create costumes that incorporated technologies in ways never utilized in our industry before. Quantum has also won accolades and awards for its work in the horror genre for special makeup effects. Sucker Punch is an example of Quantum’s unique work in combining bio-mechanical and makeup prosthetics. Currently, our goal is to provide high-end, cutting-edge costume and makeup effects at affordable prices as budget is important to everyone today while still maintaining a high standard of quality and great customer service. All of our work is individually crafted and given attention by an excellent team of artists. We also are willing to consider all projects: large or small and try to work with all budgets, if possible.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been very challenging. When I first started Quantum makeup effects work started drying up and going all mostly digital. I could see that there wouldn’t be much of this work in the future and I started looking for other work opportunities. My first few big jobs were in costume work on large profile films and this helped set the stage for becoming known more as a specialty costume shop. Now, that is mostly what we do along with specialty armour and props.

I am very proud that in a competitive work field – Quantum has been able to adapt and excel through the years.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love all the different types of people, culture, music and other options the city has to offer. It is really a very diverse city that has something for everyone.
For a city that embraces so many ideas and people – it is unfortunate we are not moving forward faster on things like mass transit and alternative energy/building, etc. Los Angeles is great but still behind other cities like Mexico City and Europe in its mass transit and architecture.
