Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrisshauna Coleman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Owner and CEO of VSlay! For 17 years, I struggled with chronic Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections. I felt so embarrassed, ashamed and overwhelmed. I would go to the doctor’s office sit in a stuffy room with my head held low and tell the doctor that my vagina smelled awful, no matter what I did to practice cleanliness. I would get the same prescription (metronidazole aka Flagyl which tasted awful) take it for the prescribed amount of time in hopes that it would never return. Welp, less than a week later, it was back like it never left. I can vividly recall a time I experienced BV in high school, I was in the last period of the day, and I had the prettiest dress on and the nicest pair of heels.
Out of nowhere, this putrid smell wafted through the air, I had no idea where it was coming until I looked down. IT WAS ME! I was so self-conscious. Could my friends smell me? Were they talking about me? My self-esteem took a major hit! So for a span of five years or so I had taken the antibiotics so much that I’d become resistant to them. I had BV so much it started causing intimacy issues in my marriage! Yikes! After countless doctor’s visits, expensive prescriptions with no results, I began to research why this kept happening and what could counteract the bacteria. DUN DA DA DAAAA Boric Acid was my answer. I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t a bit nervous because after all the only thing I had ever heard Boric Acid being used for was insecticide. But the more I researched the more I learned and realized that it was naturally found in Volcanic fissures and seawater and that there are different grades of Boric Acid.
Needless to say, I took the leap and it was THE BEST decision of my life. Not only did my confidence receive a major boost but so did my need to tell the world about the miraculous gift of Boric Acid and that gave birth to VSlay! My purpose is to educate and give women their freedom back! I want to let women know there’s an answer! You do not have to keep fighting this alone. Having a balanced PH is an emotional journey, and just when you’ve thought “finally it’s gone yes thank goodness I can breathe a little” it comes right back! It’s disheartening, not only does it play on your emotions, but it affects your physical well being as well! Many women are out there right now so uninformed about their body. It’s such a taboo to talk about a vagina and it’s do’s and don’ts s with so much misinformation is being put out.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far yes! As my father says, “I do not have bad days I have good days and I have better days! I have some amazing mentors and an amazing group of ladies that share the entrepreneurial spirit. We lean on each other for information and tips!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about VSLAY – what should we know?
So first let’s start with the name. I chose the name VSlay because I wanted to reach my audience. V is obviously for Vagina and Slay because my audience slays in everything they do. From their hair, makeup, fashion, education, and careers my audience knows who they are as women and want their entire being to match their drive. VSlay’s mission is to give women their life back by offering our natural remedy to yeast infections and Bacterial Infection by way of our Boric Acid suppositories, our organic panty liners and our sterile suppository applicators. I have more in the works such as feminine wipes and body washes and much much more.
As a company, I am proud of the space that I have created particularly on social media. Times have changed so much but the taboos and whispers about feminine hygiene or even just saying the word vagina exist. On VSlay’s social media platforms Facebook or Instagram we have women OPENLY talking about the health of their Vaginas! I love it! I love to see vaginal health talked about with ease, without embarrassment. I also love that women from all over the world see the community and inbox me with questions.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Transparency. I have gotten countless DMs saying that my transparency is refreshing and how strong I was to tell something so personal to the world… I feel that if I can just be REAL and tell my story many other women will hear and see that they are not alone and can get the help they need.
