Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Yuhas.
Chris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a fitness fanatic since a young age playing 15 years of competitive ice hockey. After hockey, I developed an interest in bodybuilding. With that interest in bodybuilding was a signal to become even more knowledgeable with sports fitness and nutrition. A strong passion developed regarding how to properly diet for cosmetic (bodybuilding/modeling purposes). I worked my way up the ranks in nutrition stores and supplement manufacturers for around 10 years. During my travel as a supplement rep, I met the owners of Vegas Discount Nutrition. When the time was right, I asked the owners Vegas to please let me open the very first out of state store. We finalized an agreement in mid-2015 and then OC Discount Nutrition became reality. My passion finally became the very business I’ve always wanted to own. To this day it’s still surreal to think that, “This is really happening…”
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s an entirely draining struggle that you want to endure because you need to endure. It wasn’t easy taking every worldly possession I had, putting it all on the line as collateral, and not making a dime for about a year getting one of the largest nutrition stores in the entire State of California, not to mention the entire United States, setup. It’s not easy seeing money consistently draining from the bank account and wondering if this great concept will work outside of where it originated. I couldn’t count the number of days I was almost sick with anxiety and into the next day being ecstatic that we finished one goal to make the big goal a reality and have OC Discount Nutrition open. Thankfully the hard work my team and I invested in our town has been met with customers consistently choosing us for their nutrition needs, and we’re nothing short of honored by everyone trusting us with their business.
OC Discount Nutrition – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
OC Discount Nutrition, a Vegas Discount Nutrition store, is the world’s premier vitamin and sports supplement store for several reasons. One of our best traits is offering online and wholesale pricing on over 50,000 pieces of inventory in over 5,500 sq. ft. grocery like store. Unlike almost all of our competitors, we do not carry a house brand or hidden house brand. We do not commission or spiff our staff and do not hire salesmen. Our floor staff helping customers are required to be independently certified nutritionists through NAFC. With this we have a very friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable nutrition staff. If scheduled ahead of time we will also write a diet for your specific goals absolutely free because we want your investment in the gym and with your supplements to be maximized to their fullest. With that, we truly stand apart and no one comes close.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There have been many of these moments but outside of the ecstatic Yelp, Facebook, and Google reviews it’s when a customer comes back and thank you for changing their lives. Sometimes we don’t even sell someone a product and just offer our honest advice on how someone can best hit their next goal. On a random afternoon, myself and my staff members have been given gifts from our customers and we’ve even been getting regular gifts on the holidays. To us we’re not just here to have a job it’s a way of life and a community. It melts the heart every time we’re welcomed by our customers to their circles and even family. It’s humbling and never ceases to be surreal.
