Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Pearson.
Chris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The starting point for my pursuit of a career in photography came when I attended a friend’s wedding around 10 years ago. My closest friends gathered for the event, its actually one my favorite memories. I took a small camera with me, intent on capturing moments that I felt were personal to me and to my friends. Weeks after the wedding, whilst looking back on those photos with the bride and groom, and seeing the joy and emotion they felt from reliving each moment captured on camera, it was decided in my head that this is what I wanted to do with my life.
From there, I attended University in Liverpool to get my BA, and moved to Manchester to become a freelancer. Around a year and a half into freelancing, I heard about a program called Camp America. This company places people with trades such as photography with summer camps all over the USA.
Camp was an amazing experience for me, it gave me a taste of American culture and peaked my interest in exploring more of it. So after camp I made my way over to LA, that’s where I met my now wife of three years, and began photography out here.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There has been plenty of struggles! I first started freelancing during my degree, so this meant I needed the equipment to get the job done efficiently. While the other students around me were getting their student loans and heading out to the bars, I was using my loans to buy cameras and lenses, working at the University store to make ends meet and keep myself fed!
Another big struggle I found was leaving behind the clients and business I had built in England. Moving out here to the states I was effectively starting again from scratch! That seemed a very daunting task, but persistence is key, and I slowly but surely built up a steady flow of clients.
Please tell us about Chris Pearson Photography.
I specialize in wedding and event photography, but I have also shot everything from fashion shoots to portraits, even product photography! I never shy away from a new shoot because it allows me to broaden my skill set in other areas of photography I may not have ventured into before. That’s something which has been key to my success as a photographer and I feel it sets me apart from other photographers. I feel most creative when I am creating my own format for a shoot, experimenting and not going by conventions or rules.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing! My trials, mistakes, and hardships are what has made into the professional I am today. And the person I am! I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything.
