Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Pascual and Ronnie Lopez.
Chris and Ronnie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started in the back of a batting cage back in the summer of 2014 in the city of Torrance. We started by training youth athletes. It then grew into training collegiate and professional athletes. Through the years, we have worked with athletes from all sports. We have worked with high school basketball teams, elite baseball travel programs, collegiate baseball programs, women’s professional soccer teams, all across the South Bay. With all this being said, our conversation has always been the same: develop strength and work capacity. Our approach has always been to focus on how well our athletes moved to the gym. Our past experience has shown us that many fitness programs miss this point. We felt we needed to guide athletes by educating them on how to train for their sport. With this approach, we have had athletes train in our program from middle school through all four high school years, and compete at a division one program.
We have evolved over the last few years and have expanded to help the general population. We are now located in the heart of Hermosa Beach and have an eye towards making a difference in this community. There are good gyms but we feel we bring something different and unique. We want to show the value of moving well in the gym.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. We have had to battle stereotypes along the way. Strength and conditioning have a very bad perception when it comes to training athletes. From stunting growth to causing back pain issues, we have heard it all. Although we have done a good job of educating athletes, parents and coaches through actual scientific research, we still battle a lot of stereotypes. We continue to prove that a sound program and great coaching proves these myths wrong.
A big issue for us has been the belief that “this is not for me” or “it’s too hard”. We have taken a lot of care to break things down so that anyone, including grandma, could benefit and improve her physical health in our gym.
Bulkiness has also been a big hurdle from our female population. Taking their concerns very seriously, we have spent the time and done the research to show that what they see on social media, billboards and commercials is not what they will get from our program.
To their surprise, the result has always been better health, strength and overall lifestyle.
In the end, we have enjoyed the ride. How fun would the ride be without a few ups and downs, right?
So, as you know, we’re impressed with DEUCE Athletics – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a strength and conditioning gym that focuses on empowering individuals with sound movements. Simply, we want to make sure our members are doing things properly so they don’t get injured (as is far too common). We specialize in building a solid foundation through our general physical preparedness program. We also specialize in strength and speed development with our strength program and speed program.
We can’t forget to mention our youth classes. P.E. programs in schools are becoming an after thought and we provide a great resource that helps fill that void.
We are most proud of our community. We are instilling leaderships values in our members that are setting a standard away from our facility.
There should be no surprise as to why you will find “Hold The Standard” hanging above our doors (in 24k gold of course!).
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Having been raised in the South Bay, we have seen the South Bay develop over the past 25 years. It’s our home. How could you not like your home?!
With that said, we love how much we have to explore! From mountains to beaches and everything in between, we have so many options to enjoy.
“What do we like least about our city?” Easy… TRAFFIC!
