Meet Chris Greenwell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Greenwell.

Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I moved to LA 6+ years ago just in pursuit of a better lifestyle and I decided I would build a photography career. For the first few years, I was working in restaurants and bars, and after 3 years I was able to be self-employed. I was working hard and enjoying that until the pandemic came around and I lost all my work in 24 hours, as I’m sure many can relate to! By then I had just started rollerskating which has led to a huge shift in the trajectory of my life, and a shift that I never saw coming.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth, and I’m sure there are days in the future that won’t feel smooth, but I have been in a prolonged state of enjoyment these days in LA. A lot of the non-stop work and hustle I did in the first years of living in LA really set me up with a functional network of people and with some of the best friends I’ve ever had as well!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
These days most of my work is on the performance side of things. I’ve admittedly turned into one of the “LA ambiguous creatives” and I love it!!! I got into performance via rollerskating. For the whole year before the pandemic, my roommate had been inviting me to come skate at the rink. Every week I’d say, “maybe next week,” until one day in February 2020 I got to actually see rollerskate dance in front of my face, and that’s when I knew I wanted to do it. So, I joined my roommate that next week at the rink and was going for a few weeks before the pandemic hit. Once the pandemic was a thing, I lost all my photography work and spent the whole time on my skates. Eventually, I started posting skate videos online and that type of visibility allowed me to start booking work with it, which has now led to me working in other areas of dance and performance!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I’m not sure if I have one specific childhood memory, but I always loved those first few days when summer break would start, and school would be over. I always loved the sense of expanded freedom as a kid and running around outside in the sun.
