Meet Chloe Tang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Tang.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always loved music since I was little and it was natural for me to always be playing instruments, singing, and creating music growing up, but it wasn’t until I attended Grammy Camp in 2013 when I was in high school that I knew it would be my career. I started my career as a singer/songwriter and always working on my craft then when I went to college in Denver for music, I realized I wanted to be an artist as well. It was in my everyday routine to be working at music, whether that meant practicing, writing, connecting with people. I am fully self-started. I have been fortunate enough to have a lot of help from people around me, but ultimately I have built what I have because I took the risk and started getting to know people who could book me for local shows, play in my backing band, and help me get better at songwriting. I just moved to LA in October, and I’m currently grinding so that music can be my full-time job someday soon. But until then, I will continue being working as hard as I possibly can to be the smartest, best, businesswoman and musician I can be so I’m ready for what’s next.

Please tell us about your art.
I write songs about experiences. All my songs come from somewhere truly real and true experiences I’ve had or witnessed. The things I have to say in my music are not always pretty or romantic, but I do take pride in expressing ideas that are not censored or sugar-coated. I recently wrote a song called “I Aint Shit,” and it’s about feeling really down about yourself and playing the comparison game. I also wrote a song called “Lame” which is about people thinking I’m being lame when I call out of work or don’t want to go out, but in reality, it’s so much deeper than that. It’s about social anxiety, depression, panic attacks. Of course, all my music isn’t this cryptic, and I love a happy, upbeat pop song, but overall, I want to bring a level of realness to my songs.

I truly believe all artists are like friends. You have friends that are your go-tos when you wanna party. Same with music. You have a playlist that is perfect for that moment in your day. You have an artist you listen to when you’re feeling sad, or chipper, or sexy. I want to be the friend who reminds you that you’re never alone. I want to be the artist people listen to when their emotions are overflowing, and they think, “am I crazy?” I’ll be there to say, “Yeah but I am too.”

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
This is just advice for anyone, not even necessarily artists- but I’ve learned that being yourself is really important, and in order to do that, you gotta spend some time enjoying life as it is and not always worrying about a career or the future. My natural tendency is to be working ALL the time and always be “networking” or writing. But the best things in my life and career have happened because I fell in love and traveled and fell on my ass and fucked up relationships. Without all that, I wouldn’t have learned who I am as a person, and how am I supposed to be an artist with messages to shout if I don’t even know how I operate and view the world? I fully believe it takes time and effort to learn how to be yourself, but once you do, the right things tend to happen.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I am on Spotify, Apple Music, all the major streaming services. You can support my social media @chloetangmusic. I am also starting to play shows around LA. My next one is April 30, 2019, at Madame Saim. I have a music video for my latest single, “Hype” coming out this month as well!
