Meet Chinatown Photographer: Valerie Brooks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Brooks.

Valerie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I took up photography as a hobby while I was in film school. I wanted something on the side that would help me get more creative and be able to interact with celebs at exclusive events. I got to where I am now by completing a four-month internship and networking on the red carpet.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road when you’re a start-up brand who wants to expand and get exclusive clients. Struggles are getting paid gigs on a consistent basis and saving enough money to upgrade your camera equipment.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
My proudest moment in my career thus far was covering my first film premiere on the red carpet (Pete’s Dragon).

Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
My struggle is expanding an upcoming brand. Big clients/companies tend to hire ppl who are well established. It’s hard when you don’t have a big “ace” to help take your business to the next level

Is there something we can do as a city to improve the outlook for professionals like you?
I think Los Angeles is a great location for photography because it’s the center of entertainment. The majority of the ppl in this particular industry enjoy being in front of a camera
