Today we’d like to introduce you to Chie Davis.
Hi Chie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi I’m Chie (pronounced Chia), and I’m the creator of Mommafied, a blog and wellness shop. I seek to help busy moms who are running on empty, and struggling with how to create space for consistent plant-based living, maximize their time by sharing quick vegan food and wellness solutions, so they can feel recharged.
Mommafied started as a personal blog in 2018 to document my journey as a 40-year-old new mom of two, juggling new mom life, work, and two cross-country moves. Writing about my experience became a calming way for me to share my truth and connect with other moms.
Then, in 2020 I found myself in a space of burnout, like 9.8 million other working mothers in the U.S. At the start of the pandemic, I was working incredibly long hours from my home, while simultaneously homeschooling our young children and navigating our health and household during an uncertain time. I was overweight, exhausted, and deflated.
One day, the company that I was working for called. I thought they were going to give me kudos for my hard work, but they laid me off on the spot. I was furious, not just from being laid off, but mad at myself for once again being in a place of burnout. I’d been here before. Overworking, then pouring the rest of my energy into our family, not leaving an ounce of energy for myself. After losing my beloved 43-year-old sister from a heart attack in 2016, I knew that neglecting self-care could be dangerous.
I was bombarded with stats about how bad it was for moms, but no real solutions. So, I created one! Mommafied was born as a way for me to heal and hold myself accountable on my health and self-care journey, and after building community, has grown into a platform that helps moms put on their oxygen masks first.
I relaunched Mommafied that year, as a way to heal and hold myself accountable on my health journey. After building a community, it has grown into a platform that helps moms put on their oxygen masks first. My blog evolved from me sharing personal testimonials about mom life to documenting how I lost 40 pounds. I talked about how mindset, at-home workouts and vegan life saved me. I also began sharing preventative health tips from industry experts on topics like how to meditate and practical ways to sustain work/life balance.
As my passion for vegan life grew in 2022, I tightened the focus of my brand. Mommafied is now a blog and wellness shop specifically focused on helping busy, working moms over 35 who are struggling with how to create space for consistent plant-based living. I offer quick and simple plant-based food and wellness solutions to help moms feel replenished.
Readers will find vegan-life content, tips for transitioning to veganism, and recipes on my blog. They’lll find plant-based products in my wellness shop. This includes my homegrown, bamboo silk sleep masks, made here in Los Angeles, and all-natural bath, body, and spirit products produced by other women-owned, small businesses.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far, my life as a mompreneur has been a 24/7 juggling act. Time is one of my biggest challenges. My family takes priority. Some weeks that can look like me taking my kids to soccer practice, ballet, playdates, birthday parties, us painting together, or having a family fun day, and working on Mommafied while our children sleep. I often share elements of the business with my kids, like tasting a new recipe that I’m testing, or helping me decorate mannequins for a pop-up show. I want both of my children to feel included, as I consider Mommafied a family business.
My line of sleep masks was inspired by a gift from my daughter, who was six at the time and understood the importance of having a well-rested mommy. She wanted to make sure that I became one. She’s been my right hand, helping to sketch mask designs and sharing feedback about the artwork.
But it’s not all roses and butterflies. Sometimes Mom guilt can get thick, especially when I’m heads down on a project that demands a lot of my time. In addition to being a mom, wife, and working, as a solo entrepreneur I’m also the writer, product tester, marketer, fundraiser, social media manager, tech support, and face of the brand. My goal is to scale my business and expand our team. For now, I wear all of the hats.
To maintain my sanity and drive I lean on daily self-care practices, like prayer and exercise, to stay aligned with my purpose. But, some days self-care is not enough. I have to fully surrender to my family or business obligations that day to make progress. It’s a delicate juggle of holding my family high, making space for my business, and knowing when and how far to take risks.
I invested in an amazing life/business coach who helped to transform my perspective and build a business roadmap. I also chat with a few parent entrepreneurs weekly for encouragement and idea sharing. I’m thankful for the support that I receive from my family.
As an owner of a wellness brand, I feel obligated to maintain my family’s personal wellness as we build and grow. I consciously choose to anchor myself in healthy habits and aim for steady growth instead of pouring every ounce of my soul into my brand in exchange for quick success. I’ve personally seen how that can lead to burnout and a crashing business. I want Mommafied to be sustainable for years to come, helping as many women as possible to regain their energy and sense of self-care using simple plant-based solutions.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As someone who has experienced burnout, I’m also an advocate of busy women getting more sleep. When I created my line of silk, and most recently plant-based sleep masks made out of soft bamboo fabric, the purpose was to help women maximize their rest and get higher sleep quality. As interest in my sleep masks increased, I launched a plant-based wellness boutique full of curated vegan bath, body, and spiritual products made by other women-owned small businesses. Some of my offerings include coconut-soy candles with enticing aromas, revitalizing herbal bath soaks made out of peppermint, rosemary, and butterfly pea, high-vibration meditation cards, and fresh California sage bundles to usher in positive energy.
Mommafied steps in where other mainstream wellness brands don’t by focusing on optimizing the health of working-class moms over 35, whose sense of self-care has been put last, buried by the media, our work culture, traditional gender roles, and ourselves. We don’t necessarily always have access to private chefs, personal trainers, full-time nannies, and personal assistants, but we still want to live a healthy, abundant, stress-free, intentional life of wellness.
We want to have access to clean water, fresh fruit and vegetables without leaving our neighborhoods. We want to eat decadent and delicious plant-based meals that are tasty enough for our kids to eat yet simple enough for us to prepare after a long day of work. We want to feel invigorated and energized by life as a mom, not like a disheveled hot mess who’s constantly trying to keep up. As someone in the trenches of real mom-life, I strive to share all that I know and have access to help other mothers. Mommafied’s mission is to help women rewrite the beautiful narrative of what motherhood can look like when self-care and energizing plant life is woven into the fabric of their daily lives.
I’m most proud of staying the course and not giving up! I’ve reinvented Mommafied three times, starting as a personal blog, moving to general health and wellness, and now focused on vegan life for busy moms. I finally feel “at home” when sharing and connecting with my audience. I feel like I’m doing what I’ve been called to do, and hope that my capacity to share widens.
Before I became a mom, I was told that motherhood could slow me down and squash my dreams. Now, I understand that while my current lifestyle requires me to shift my workflow, my passion and drive to make a difference has skyrocketed, and my goals have wildly expanded. I’m very grateful for this motherhood journey.
