Meet Cheryl Beck of Bold Girlz in El Segundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheryl Beck.

Cheryl, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was passionate about Girl Empowerment and raising awareness for causes that support girls around the world. Bold Girlz started out as a tween fashion brand with the mission of encouraging girls to be B.O.L.D. Brave, Original, Loving and Daring. The first Bold Girlz interactive retail store opened in Orange County in 2011 offering fun fashion parties, rock star parties, spa parties, Girl Scout Community Service projects, Etiquette workshops and Summer Fashionista FUN Camps. Our stores are boldly decorated with a fashion runway and live sound system for high energy, fun parties and events. The demand for manners workshops, prompted us to introduce etiquette programs that are fun and engaging for girls. After several stores opened in Orange County, we are excited to announce our first LA-based location opening in November of 2017 at Plaza El Segundo.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggles along the way have been finding the right location that reaches the most families in the right demographic area, and provides foot traffic to support the retail business. Also, getting the word out that we are more than just a birthday party place has been a challenge, so we market to Girl Scouts and moms about our Community Service Projects and Etiquette Training. We hire part-time High School girls that do hair and makeup and act as party staff. These part-time girls always seem to provide a staffing challenge for calling out sick or having some family emergency at the last minute. I take pride in my training of these girls to deliver the most quality service that will please the most discerning parent. Anyone that runs a retail store or other brick and mortar will tell you the challenge of store maintenance of plumbing, air conditioning. I have become quite the McGyver.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bold Girlz story. Tell us more about the business.
Bold Girlz is more than a party place but a place where girls can have fun anytime. What sets us apart from other “Girly Glam” places is the quality of the staff, store decor, fashion runway, professional sound system with live microphones and the services we offer beyond parties.

Our branded clothing and accessories are very trendy and tasteful. I am proud of the service and attention we give parents in the party planning process from first phone call to the end of the party. Even though you can book your parties online, I like to spend time on the phone with each parent and make sure that we cover every detail of the party from invitations to goodie bags.

I am most proud when the birthday girl and her parents are blown away by the Bold Girlz experience and give us many 5-star YELP reviews. I personally get a lot of satisfaction being known as an etiquette trainer and making the classes fun and engaging, and not stuffy. I get a lot of hugs after these classes by girls and their parents.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe you create your own luck by engaging with other people and looking for opportunities. You have to put yourself out there every day so luck will find you. I am lucky to have been born to great parents who instilled great values in me. My mom always made me feel that I could do anything, and my dad instilled in me financial responsibility as well as strict manners. I live my life as the poster child for being BOLD and it has always served me well.
