Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Smith.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my Sandy Swim journey as a digital marketing student. I was trying to gain experience in marketing by undergoing intern or practicum work. However, I was turned away as I had no experience. At the time, I was also reading #girlboss by Sophia Amrousa, which inspired me to take matters into my own hands.
I have previous experience with working for a large electronic e-commerce company, and I was able to bring this experience to my new company. Also, I watched videos on YouTube and just kept growing my knowledge on digital marketing. I am now in school for business admin so I can understand different aspects that help benefit my position as the executive director of Sandy Swim.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no. If I was to say it was easy, that would be a lie. I have given up my sleep, and my social life in order to grow this company all while being a full-time student. I would never change that for anything in my life. I am very blessed on how my company has grown, who I have been able to meet, and how it keeps expanding.
I think the biggest struggle is learning who really supports you during the challenging times. The people you want to support you are the ones that might not be the ones that end up supporting you. This doesn’t make your dream unachievable, but you need to stay focused on yourself and your goals.
You are the longest investment in your life. You have the ability to keep yourself disciplined and focused on what you want. If you feel nobody supports you, I’m here for you – us business owners should all stick together. All it takes is one person to support you during the difficult times.
Also the learning curves – nobody tells you if you are making the right decision for the company. It’s a 50/50 chance, and you just have to jump and hope for the best. If I have to make a large decision for the company I make sure to consider everything before finalizing it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sandy Swim – what should we know?
Sandy Swim is a ladies swimwear collection. At this time, we are focusing on just ladies swimwear. Our ethos is about making women feel confident in swimsuits and feeling empowered by wearing our products. We aim to convey this message via The Scoop (our online blog) and our Ambassador program.
I am proud of the whole company, it has been the best experience of my life. I think the one thing that stands out in my mind is the opportunity I have to work with women who share the same vision for the company. I feel it’s rare to find that type of mix. My team is the reason I keep going when I feel I am defeated.
In terms of our point of difference, I believe it’s our strong commitment to customer service. I want women to understand we don’t see them as a sale, but part of our community, as though they are just hanging out with their BBF (Best Beach Friend). I love when I get feedback from customers whether it’s negative or positive, I always listen. Customer feedback is crucial to the growth of the company, and I am beyond grateful for our worldwide Sandy Swim customers.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the most important characteristic would have to be the understanding that a business does not get built in one day. Have the drive and just keep working at it every day and it will all come into play.
I think if I start this adventure over, I would have just started it sooner. I love how much I have learnt and would never trade it for anything in the world. I have grown as a person, I have learnt so much. I am just so lucky to have this opportunity. I wish I just found it sooner.
