Meet Chelsea Simone of Move Better Look Better in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Simone.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Chelsea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was introduced to strength training in college. I was earning my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from Fordham University and the Ailey School. Our instructors suggested that we take up strength training to supplement our dance training. Not long after I began strength training, I noticed a major improvement in my endurance and balance. I was so thrilled that it could benefit me in such a specific way, I was inspired to share the benefits of strength training with others.

In November of 2012, I became a certified personal trainer at Equinox Columbus Circle in New York. It gave me a great foundation in functional training–training that is based on exercises that are useful in everyday life. In May 2015, I moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and I started my own company Move Better Look Better. “Each program is custom designed for each client with a focus on improving posture, form and mobility. [My] goal is to help clients feel good now and keep them feeling good and moving well as they age.” In this same year, I developed and began teaching my own boot camp (MBLBfit Camp).

In July of 2016, I moved down to LA, began dancing for the LA Clippers, teaching MBLBfit Camp at Mattel Inc, and continued my freelance personal training career. Over the summer, I will begin teaching monthly MBLBfit Camps at various sites in LA, working on collaborations with local companies, building my clientele and building my professional dance career.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has most certainly not been a smooth road. Being a freelance personal trainer is great because I’m my own boss and have a lot of control. However, I am responsible for finding my own clients and here in LA there’s a ton of competition with the other trainers in the area. I’m always trying to market myself and find new clients, but there is a constant ebb and flow to this business.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Move Better Look Better was developed with functional training in mind. To me, fitness is not only about how you look, it’s also about how you move. I train my clients with the intent to improve their posture and/or flexibility in addition to reaching their aesthetic fitness goals. I want clients to be able to move well and stay physically fit as they age. As a dancer, posture and flexibility are very important to me. I’m proud to say that I don’t have lower back pain due to a sedentary lifestyle. I don’t have knee pain due to dysfunctional movement patterns. I want my clients to experience this as well.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a solitary and artistic child. I always chose coloring over playing with dolls. I was an only child for the first 9 years of my life so I got very used to entertaining myself. I think this lead to me being as independent as I am. Much of my time was invested in dance, which I began at age 4. I was dancing almost 7 days a week by the age of 10.
