Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Blue
Hi Chelsea, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a Hollywood-based Mental Health Therapist, stylist, and fashion designer. I have been a Mental Health Therapist for 8 years now, which has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have always loved to dress up and express myself through fashion, however, I did not truly start to pursue fashion design until 2020 during the pandemic, likely due to time at home and the need for a creative outlet. In 2020, I began to design simple items such as tee shirts with my paintings printed on them. In 2021, I began to step out of by comfort zone and create custom pieces inspired by high fashion runways and Drag. In 2022 and 2023, I started my work in personal styling, styling for events, as well as styling music videos for artists CERANDA (Instagram @Ceranda_xo) and Hunny Bee (Instagram @djhunnybee), in which some of my custom pieces have been featured. In 2024, I have shifted into an era of focusing increasingly on fashion design and creating one-of-a-kind custom pieces.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I truly believe that my creativity has always been at its most powerful during times of emotional distress, and I have used art to escape the reality around me. Being a therapist has required me to navigate many challenging emotions and even led to me developing secondary trauma earlier in my career. This role has subsequently required me to cope in a timely manner to continually serve the population I work with. Creating art and escaping into the fashion world has been my favorite daily outlet, and has proven to be extremely helpful in navigating challenging periods of my life.
I have struggled with a lot of self doubt over the years and I’ve found the best way to overcome it is to acknowledge we are all just doing the best we can with what we have in the moment.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a therapist by day, and in my personal time I love dressing up in highly stylized looks, creating easy DIY fashion craft videos on TikTok, and creating fashion art-pieces.
Getting dressed can easily be a thoughtless process. To me, there is something so special about spending weeks or months leading up to a final product or project, pouring yourself fully into the product with planning, research, selecting the right colors or fabrics, selecting the accessories, shoes, makeup, wigs, nails, and seeing it all come together to create a refined result.
I try to continue to push my own boundaries with fashion; I would rather take a risk and make something hideous that is never worn, than to not try and make a unique piece. I am proud of how many fashion pieces I have been able to create, in order to express myself and assist other people feel like the most elevated version of themselves.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I highly recommend anyone who is struggling with anything mentally or emotionally to try therapy. It is worth mentioning that not everyone connects with the first therapist they meet with, so if you do not feel like it is a good fit for you, it is okay to meet with someone else. Therapy is a great way to have an individualized healing experience tailored to your needs. Thankfully, mental health treatment is becoming increasingly normalized. The times I have been in therapy in the past were truly transformative periods for me.
I highly recommend watching RuPaul’s Drag Race if you enjoy fashion, comedy, competition shows, or reality TV. I have always been inspired by Drag Queens on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Instagram, and out in West Hollywood, and how they take fashion and self-expression to the next level of artistry. It is their influence that has made me the artist I am today.
