Meet Charlyne Alvarado of Blissful Baby Doula Services in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlyne Alvarado.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the eldest of four sisters raised by a single mother. When she was working I would help care for my sisters and upkeep with household chores. After high school I went to a trade school and graduated as an airframe and power plant technician (airplane mechanic). After working in the field I felt empty and wasn’t happy with my career. I began researching and soul searching. It only felt natural to do what I already knew. That was to support and care for families with children. I became a postpartum doula and felt complete. I have expanded my knowledge and taken additional trainings to offer more to families. Now I have opened my own doula business and I couldn’t be any happier. I still continue supporting families and have a team of doulas who work with me. We all share the same passion and we love what we do. Like they say if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been smooth. In the beginning I struggled. Since I was new, very young, and didn’t have kids of my own so it was hard to find work. Clients doubted my abilities. I had to prove myself because most of my clients were older than me. But after hiring me, they couldn’t be happier with my services. As I gained experience, took additional training, and read many books I was a successful self-employed doula. There came a point in my career where I was getting more job offers than I could handle. I then decided to open my own doula business and create a team of doulas. My team and I share the same vision. That is to support families on their journey through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. We carry this out by offering nonjudgmental support and educating. Serving each family in accordance with their needs and parenting styles.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Blissful Baby Doula Services provides childbirth education, birth support, breastfeeding education, postpartum support and sleep training for babies and toddlers. What we’re most proud of as a company is that we make a difference with each family we work with. When we come in these parents are so unsure about their abilities to care for their newborns and themselves. We walk them past their insecurities, fears, and show them they can do it. What sets us apart from others is that we’re honest, hardworking, and help families find their way. Our number one rule is never judge. There is wrong or right way to parent.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was caring, kind, and responsible at an early age. I played soccer and enjoyed my summers as a kid in my parents’ native country of Honduras.
