Meet Charlotte Hennington of Casery in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlotte Hennington.

Casery started on the balcony of our CEO, Matthew’s, Glendale apartment. We started as a custom phone case company with the idea that each person could create his or her ideal phone case. We quickly realized our bread and butter is design, so we put together a line of branded cases which became extremely popular. Our first wholesale show was exactly one year ago, and that’s where our sales took off.

Instead of showing our product at tech shows, we went to only fashion shows. We really opened buyers’ minds to the idea that phone cases are the ultimate fashion accessory–they outfit the one item that is always with you. And consumers were missing out on this really fun way of expressing themselves.

By focusing on fashion, we carved out a unique path for ourselves. Now we are in over 1,500 doors worldwide, working with everyone from small boutique owners to multimillion dollar brands like Free People, Steve Madden, and PacSun.

For 2018 we are focused on releasing new products with Casery’s personality. Millennial pink, iridescent foil, and beach vibes. Our team is growing and we’re excited about where our hard work is taking us!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think starting a business from scratch is ever a smooth road. If it is, you’re doing something wrong! For us, the biggest struggle has been expanding at a rate we can keep up with. We are a team of highly motivated people who never want to have to turn down a large order or miss a trade show because we don’t yet have the capacity to do it all. Most of us wear many hats so that we can act as a much larger company than we actually are. It’s kind of a good problem to have. It keeps us hungry and wanting more!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Casery is known for its personality. Our motto is “Protect the One You Love,” which of course refers to your cell phone, but to me it shows how cheeky we are as a company. Our cases are the perfect combination of fashion and protection, so there’s no sacrifice.

We specialize in design–we know that what looks good on a shirt or handbag is not the same as what looks good on a case. We have had to tell some very influential people that their case designs won’t sell well, which wasn’t easy, but ultimately gained their respect and shows how much we know about the industry.

What I’m most proud of is how we have built something amazing from literally nothing. When we began 2 years ago, none of us knew anything about plastics, factories, wholesaling, etc. Now we have the same knowledge and connections as the huge players in the game. We used the skills and strengths that we started with to learn what we needed to know, and to improve upon how things were being done.

Our attention to detail in design is what sets us apart from others. From our packaging and case designs to our trade show booths and marketing materials, we are meticulous about branding and ensure that anything we produce is exactly what the Casery girl wants.

What were you like growing up?
I was pretty much a perfect child 🙂 I never rebelled, never got in trouble, and got straight A’s throughout school. My parents really drove me to success, but also instilled in me the importance of family and having a support system. I knew that I could never be great without loving others, and having people who loved me.

When I was little I wanted to be the first female President of the United States. (I guess there’s still time!) I loved learning and reading–my obsession with the written word began very young, and I will still argue over the use of the Oxford comma (in my book it’s an absolute necessity).

I never thought I would be where I am today. I thrive on security and certainty, so it’s definitely been a growing experience to start a company and quit my salaried job to be full-time Creative Director! It was the best (and scariest) decision I’ve made in my adult life.
