Meet Charlie Powell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Powell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Charlie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Thank you for having me! Well I was born and raised in Sydney Australia, growing up close to the beach, I found my love for the sun and surf and the easy, going lifestyle that came with it. At the age of three, my parents put me into dance class, which was definitely the beginning of my journey. Growing up I trained at my local dance school, which gave me the confidence to audition for Newtown High School Of The Performing Arts, where I was accepted and graduated six years later. Through those tough years of hours and hours of training and help from my mentors, I grew so much as a performer; I was lucky enough to be accepted in the Joffrey Ballet School as well as being awarded the Broadway Dance Professional Scholarship in New York City and received the Highest Female Scholarship to Point Park University. During my last couple of years of high school my focus slightly shifted, as I was intrigued in telling a story verbally instead of through movement. I then began to take more acting classes on the side at the National Institute Of Dramatic Arts as well as Screenwise Australia, and I fell in love with it. My last year of high school, I was accepted into the Sydney Dance Company Pre Professional Year, and while everyone was waiting for me to go down that path, something didn’t feel right in my gut. I then auditioned for a couple of acting programs and schools and once I was accepted into The American Academy Of Dramatic Arts, in Los Angeles, everything clicked for me and I finally found my purpose and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Dance will always be apart of me, and I will always love it but Acting is my passion. When I look back, I am beyond grateful to be on this exciting journey and do not regret the path I chose. After graduating at the Dolby Theatre, I have had the opportunity to be apart of some amazing projects while having the chance to meet amazing people along the way.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing ever goes smoothly, especially in Los Angeles! Its so hard in general to live in such a crazy competitive city, alongside everything else, like being an adult is very hard!. When I first moved here it was super tough, saying goodbye to all my love ones and leaving Australia behind was one of the hardest things I have ever done. Looking back I am still shocked of how I did it, but of course I am also very proud of myself for taking such a risk. Once I started school, I found a great group of friends, we explored the city every weekend and I finally began to understand how Los Angeles worked. I have learnt that there is always going to be obstacles in life, but that’s what makes it so worth it in the end! I have to say, I have been very lucky, having support from my family and surrounding myself with good positive energy goes along way and I’m very grateful

What were you like growing up?
Young Charlie, always wanted to be the center of attention, ‘ Mum look at me’ ‘Look what I can do’, I was always dancing around, putting on a show with a big smile on my face. I was a very happy child. Growing up I matured quite quickly as I was surrounded by adults my entire life and grew to be a very bubbly, friendly, warm individual, that always cared for others before myself. I have always loved meeting people and chatting! I get it from my Dad. I was fortunate enough to travel a lot as a kid; therefore helped my brother and I understand the world more with travelling to new places and learning about the different cultures. Besides Dancing and Acting, the beach has always been my favorite place; I am such a water baby. My beautiful parents have definitely helped me shape into the person I am today, and I can never thank them enough for what they have done for me.
