Meet Chanler Allegaert of Epic Records in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanler Allegaert.
Chanler, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to LA in January 2018 after graduating from Johns Hopkins. By the end of February I landed an assistant gig in the video dept at Epic Records working for then SVP, Sam Lecca. I vividly remember my first day of work on set of Lauren Sanderson’s “Written In The Stars” ft. PnB Rock music video shoot, which Sam directed. A great shoot and an amazing introduction to the industry. During that 1st summer I worked on the visuals for Travis Scott’s Astroworld and DJ Khaled’s Father of Asahd. In addition a few friends/creatives and I started a small production company side hustle – Etiquette Haus. I directed and producer my first music video in the summer of 2018. Continued at Epic through 2019-2020, building strong relations with several developing artists (AJ Mitchell, BEAM, Giveon, Tyla Yaweh). This past Fall I was promoted to production coordinator by our new department head Gina Harrell. It has been a blur and seems a bit crazy to say but by now I have probably worked on hundreds of music videos over 2.5 years across the entire Epic roster. One of my recent favorites was I commissioned a Swedish motion graphics firm Thundercode to create a bespoke animated music video for the newly signed, TikTok phenom Tiagz for his hit single “They Call Me Tiago”.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not entirely smooth, but a fun and incredibly rewarding. Some of the hardest struggles were getting a foot in the door at a major label w/o a ton of experience, then quickly learning the ropes and adapting to the intense workload. In my own work, the biggest struggle was directing my 1st official music video and then directing my first music video without any budget.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m currently focused on continuing to develop within the music and video production industries both at Epic and through building a reel of my own creative work. This past weekend I shot a music video for a developing female indie artist and have 2-3 more in the coming weeks.
