Today we’d like to introduce you to Chandler King.
Hi Chandler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In my life I’ve always been into music, singing/songwriting was my first life. However, over the pandemic, I was off work for seven months. During this time I picked up sewing because I wanted to make a bikini. I had never seen it before, so I ordered a super simple machine on Amazon, and tried my hand at it. Surprisingly, I really liked it, and then wanted to try more things.
From there I just hopped on youtube and started learning how to make more things. When I went back to work in October I told myself I wanted to be out of there by May. One night in March of 2021 I was at home, and had the “lettuce” fabric, and thought to myself “this would probably look really cool as pants”. So I made the first pair that night and posted them on my Instagram story. When I woke up in the morning, I had so many messages about them, and people asking if they were for sale. About a week later, I decided to put them up for sale on my page and made about $1200 in less than an hour. From there, I knew I had something to work with, and started planning my escape from work. It was really scary, but I knew I had to take a leap of faith in order to make my business grow. So in April of 2021, I quit my job to pursue BusyBdy full-time. A month later Olivia Rodrigo was wearing one of my tops in her ‘Perfect Crime’ performance video on youtube. From there, things started to take off, and have led me to where I am today!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road for the most part, but definitely not easy. This has been my first time running my own business, so learning a lot on my own, and playing every part myself has been tough. However, everything has been super rewarding, and I’ve learned so much about myself and owning a business throughout the process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a designer and seamstress. I’d say I’m most known for my lettuce pants and stitch hats. I’m most proud of the fact that I took a chance on myself, and followed my dream instead of sticking to what is safe. BUSY is an Acronym for Being Unusual Saves You which means you can be or do what you want, and still be happy and successful. You don’t always have to follow the status quo.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is patience, and how important having a positive attitude is. It’s important to feel good and to be your own number one supporter. You can’t let what other people think or do get to you.
