Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Gerber.
Chad, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began pursuing music at an early age studying classical guitar, forming bands, and sneaking into concerts in Billings Montana. I then started touring myself and performing around the US at the age of 17, then shortly thereafter moved to Los Angeles where I began working with R&B artist Aloe Blacc recording demos, EPs, and other various projects. Those projects ultimately led to dates on the Vans Warped Tour, NPR’s A prairie Home Companion, countless other collaborations and other US and EU tours.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not really lol. On my way to move to Los Angeles (I had never been here before) I had to secure my apartment while driving through Las Vegas and ended up in a rundown apartment by the Burbank Airport where gangs would greet me on my steps nightly. Luckily, I was able to get a job making fried chicken at Ralphs long enough to start recording some music and get booked in some of the clubs on Sunset. During that time, I was ripped off a few times by shady promoters and bookers who took my chicken money, but eventually I started to find my footing. I got tricked into a telemarketing job (they wouldn’t tell me the job till after a day of training) that was a scam on seniors, but I was able to sabotage their system and protect the seniors I called, while making my bosses happy, then quit a few weeks later. At some point I’m pretty sure I worked for a mafia front selling cameras, then realized things didn’t add up and ended up agreeing on a mutual firing. I was scared so I tried to back out of that one as low key as possible. In the middle of all of this I was still periodically getting scammed by bookers and promoters while paying for overpriced rehearsal spaces in the Valley. Eventually I did background work on TV shows while bouncing between jobs that would facilitate the unpredictable life of a musician.
Then there was a family situation that landed me back in Montana just long enough to finish off some leftover college and get my degree. In this time, just as I was finishing up, I signed my first record deal and moved back to Los Angeles where I finally began making headway as a musician.
Please tell us about Woodrowgerber.
I am a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and electronic music producer/dj. My major label work features me as a singer/songwriter and guitarist, and my producer work is heard mostly in the underground electronic market, on TV, Docuseries, and popular with digital content creators.
I’m known for album collaborations I’ve done with an outdoor series called Expedition Overland, having several singles chart high on the underground charts, outdoor sport videos, and a new project I’m with called Malifoo out of Brazil.
I have a somewhat “surrealist” sound that is easy to listen too and I easily move between commercial and underground music.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Hitting a homerun to tie a little league baseball game when I was 12.
