Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Kay.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cathy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In college, I was studying to be a Marine Biologist. Not too bright considering I lived in Phoenix. To be more practical I switched my major to accounting. For the first 20 years of my career, I worked for CPA firms. I tired of the long hours during tax seasons and went into private industry. I went to work as the controller in a bowling accessories manufacturing company. After five years the owner sold the company to a bowling ball manufacturer in Utah. Since the new company wanted us to stay in the same location they needed a general manager to run things in California. I now operate as both the general manager and controller. We are a small company with a wide reach. We have distributors not only across the United States but also abroad. We are represented in Mexico, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom and more. We are proud to sell products made in the USA manufacturing 95% of our products in our plant in Santa Ana.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always issues in trying to grow your business. The economical slow down a few years back definitely hit us hard. When people are tightening their belts the recreational sports are often the first things cut back. We powered through that and kept up the good fight and are thriving today.
Master Industries – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Master Industries, we manufacture several different bowling gloves and wrist supports, grip aids, ball cleaners & polishers, shoe care products, socks, towels, accessory cases & kits and pro shop supplies. We are known as the bowling accessory leader and are celebrating our 50th anniversary this year. I am most proud to say our products are made in the USA.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am very proud that the new owners have entrusted me enough to allow me to run this excellent company.
