Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Fernandez.
Hi Catherine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Yes, so I actually have an extensive background in many different mediums of art. And about two and a half years ago, I started noticing clay earrings and it really sparked my interest. And so from that point on, I learned everything I could about making clay earrings. Fast forward to where I am now, I have done multiple pop-ups as well as collaborations with other artists. And have also broadened my jewelry line to include resin and mixed metal jewelry. I am currently working with a 3D printing artist to create custom clay cutters for general consumption.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m going to answer this question with a yes and a no. It has been pretty easy for me because of my creative background. But this is also a whole new ballpark for me. So I have run into obstacles with oven temperatures, making sure my clay is conditioned and making sure my resin is balanced. It’s been a lot of trial and error. There is a huge learning process when working with mediums like this. And a lot of patience and studying goes into working with clay. But in the end, it is extremely rewarding.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I’m mainly known for my unique, abstract earring designs. And most recently, my 60’s inspired line. As I mentioned previously, I specialize mainly in clay earrings. I am most proud of the fact that my work keeps evolving into something new. What sets me apart from others is that in my clay earrings, a lot of my shapes are hand-drawn by myself. Another fun fact is that I embed a lot of recycled and deadstock jewelry pieces/beads into my jewelry.
