Meet Caroline Londergan of White House Pilates in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Londergan.

Caroline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began teaching Pilates alongside of my Professional Dance Career and was certified in Washington D.C. After teaching all around the D.C. area and growing my classes, I began teaching in The White House and was instructing the White House Staff, Secret Service, and SWAT Team both Yoga and Pilates classes.

It had always been a dream of mine to live near the ocean in a beach town, so I ended up leaving Washington D.C. and moving to the coast.

I opened “White House Pilates” in August 2009 with just 3 or 4 clients to teach. Since then it has grown to become 4 locations, a Teacher Training Certification Program, and a tremendous staff of certified teachers and interns.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, I have been very lucky to work with such an amazing staff that the journey has been quite smooth. Of course, there are a few bumps that happen along the way. When things get tough, I just take a moment to step back, reflect, and try to think outside the box. I would say the hardest part is always the work that happens behind the scenes. Such as finding a perfect studio location, negotiating leases, and all the ‘business things’ that must be in place before the actual fun can begin- teaching The Pilates Method.

White House Pilates – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our studio, White House Pilates, specializes in delivering high quality Pilates in small group settings as well as Private and Semi-Private Sessions. Our group classes are meant to be small for a reason (5 clients at maximum) so that our clients will reap the benefit and see faster results from the method. Pilates was always done as a personalized service as each of our bodies are different; we all need slightly different variations or modifications to gain the full benefit and experience ‘real’ Pilates. I say ‘real’ Pilates because many other businesses are packing in too many clients per class and the instructors are not able to personalize the workout or give a client the attention they deserve. When this happens, the Pilates workout can become watered down and some of the very important principles of Pilates can get lost. Our goal at White House Pilates is to make each client feel educated about their body, form, and alignment, that they got a great workout, and are able to walk out with boosted confidence for their day.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is launching the White House Pilates Teacher Training Certification Program. I spent a long time studying and writing the manuals for the course and we are happily celebrating our 5th year of certifying new teachers. Being able to train others to become Pilates instructors is so rewarding. I love to watch new Pilates Teachers train their first client. Passing on the skill of teaching Pilates is something that I feel very passionate about. The Pilates Method can truly change people’s lives whether it is on a mental or physical level, the ‘light bulb’ moments that occur within our studio walls is incredible to witness.
