Meet Carlos Makali’i Sosa of Surfcore Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Makali’i Sosa.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Carlos. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a seasoned fitness professional, passionate about surfing and a competitive hula and Tahitian dancer. I wanted to bring the surfing lifestyle and the Hawaiian philosophy into fitness to create SURFCORFE Fitness, a new workout that approaches fitness holistically and with a sense of aloha.

I been extremely blessed to have the best fitness mentor, Cleo Brown Miss Fitness Universe INBA, a former Olympic gymnast who has won and endless list of fitness titles. She trained me for all of my INBA World Cup title wins and has taught me more about fitness than you could ever learn under in any training certification.

Another great inspiration in my life is my beloved kumus (hula teachers) Aunty Sissy Kaio and Anette Lilinoe Kaio, who welcomed into her halau (hula school) taught me about the Hawaiian philosophy that now guides everything we do at SURFCORE Fitness.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Surfing has helped me though the most difficult moments of my life and has delivered some of the happiest experiences and the best friends. Surfing led me to Hawai’i and Hawai’i let me to hula. I have learned that like the ocean life is ever-changing. Some days, the sea is calm and glassy, producing ideal surfing conditions and in just seconds can turn into a living hell. So, it is in life.

When life has sent struggles my way I try to apply the Hawaiian philosophy of “living pono”. Pono generally translates to righteousness. living pono means living “with a conscious decision to do the right thing in terms of self, others, and the environment.” As long you strive to live pono and approach the journey with aloha any obstacle can be overcame.

My Kumu (hula teacher) Anette Lilinoe Kaio, taught me the obstacles come into our lives because there are lessons that we must learn from the experience. This point of view has changed how deal with difficulty, I try to stay humble and understand what is the lesson to be learnt.

Please tell us about Surfcore Fitness.
SURFCORE is a fun, aloha inspired circuit based 45 minute HIIT (high intensity interval training) class that uses a combination of strength, cardiovascular exercises to sculpt your body and burn up to 1,000 calories in a single session.

This super fun high-energy class welcomes all fitness levels and is divided into several timed stations. The routines are never boring or repetitive, no class is the same so you’ll encounter a variety of exercises and equipment such as kettlebells, dumbbells, custom balance boards, plyometric boxes, skateboards and plenty of aloha spirit.

We also teach hula because SURFCORE owes its origin and inspiration to the Hawaiian Islands, so we are committed to doing our part to preserve and further the culture, arts, traditions and history of Hawai’i.

What makes SURFCORE so much more than a fitness studio is the philosophy that guides us. These Hawaiian values were passed on to me by my kumus Sissy and Lilinoe Kaio and now guide everything we do at SURFCORE:

Kokua – to help one another
Malama – care for one another
Akahai – patience with one another
Lokahi – recognize others, be recognized, help others, be helped
Olu’olu – flexibility and kindness
Aloha – to love and care for one another
Kuleana – to take care of your responsibilities.

We share these values with our clients so they can apply them to their everyday life.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Every step my journey has had it meaning, I would not change anything, Everything I have experienced has made me the way I am and has contributed to the creation of SURFCORE Fitness. I own every mistake and celebrate every victory.
