Meet Carla Roda of Pamplona 89 in DTLA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Roda.

Carla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My best friend from university and myself we founded Pamplona 89 in 2015 in Barcelona. In the beginning, was just a space for friends to work together. But little by little, we discovered that more and more people wanted to join us. So, we decided to look for a bigger space, a warehouse.

Right now, we have approximately 25 companies working together in an open environment. Our idea was that everyone was able to collaborate in between each other so the workflow would be easier and faster. Without external companies. All in one place.

That same year, I decided to move to Los Angeles to do a Master’s Degree in Film & Fine Arts. Is when I met Kirill, now my husband. I explained him about Pamplona 89 and the possibility to open a second location here in Los Angeles. In the beginning, he didn’t see it very clear. Los Angeles is full of co-working spaces. But we tried to design a different approach. We tried to make it more as a community and less as a business.

May 26th, we are celebrating one year of this adventure and we can’t thank enough all the people that came through our doors.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Especially Los Angeles location. The location is managed only by me and my husband because right now is the only way we can afford to keep going.

Apart from that, we both have full-time jobs, me as a movie editor and him as a producer cinematographer. So our schedules are always a tetris.

We have 4 companies in the space right now and the rest of the time we organize shootings, events, workshops, movie nights, etc… we need to be always very organized. Thankfully, we have a lot of friends always willing to help.

We need to be active so we can keep Pamplona 89 alive. And that’s never easy because each month it’s different.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Pamplona 89 – what should we know?
Pamplona 89 is a work and creation playground shared with professionals and studios. “We share, we create and we love what we do”.

Our vision is to create a co-working community that encourages professional growth and success, networking, idea sharing, and talent development while serving as a resource to members and beyond.

To have an active, creative and sustainable community of freelance artists, entrepreneurs, and small businesses, working in a shared environment for the purposes of collaboration, innovation, and productivity for themselves and the greater of the society.

What we are most proud of our company is that we are always willing to listen to any idea and help to develop.

I think what sets us apart from other coworking is that we are not a business we are more a community, a family willing to help entrepreneurs and small companies to succeed.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think what our space offers is that people don’t just come in with a computer and work, it’s more a community [where you are] able to share what you are doing and get some advice from other people.

We also host workshops so we can make sure that the same residents or non-residents have the possibility to learn new things every month.
