Today we’d like to introduce you to Sascha Andres.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sascha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Beauty School straight out of high school because I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do. It was something that was intimidating and difficult, just because I really had no previous experience. About five months in, I fell in love with it. Out of school, I assisted for about three years under a very talented stylists at C the Salon. I then got in contact with Shai Amiel from Capella salon, and that was my first introduction to cutting/styling natural hair. I was fascinated by the process of it all. After working. A day with him decided that’s what I would like to do. I got to train under him and that was the most helpful in my growth. If not for him and his talented assistants, I would not be where I am today. It’s been an amazing journey, and I find myself still eager to learn and grow as a stylist.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think the biggest obstacles has been doubt in my abilities. I am 25 and started working in a salon at 19 so starting off in this career has had its obstacles. I feel there was a lot of compensation on my end trying to prove myself to these people that were already established. I’ve found that as long as I wasn’t comparing myself to anyone and their abilities, that’s when my strengths showed the best. Luckily, I have been grateful to be surrounded by talented, thoughtful people throughout my career, so the struggles that I faced were internal.
Tell us more about the business.
Capella Salon has changed the game in Los Angeles for tending to curly hair of all types. There are not many salons to do so here, so it has really built a reputation for it. To do curly hair, haircuts are done on freshly washed and detangled dry hair. The hair is then cut curl by curl making the style personalized to every texture and shape. When curly hair is cut wet with a comb, the results will not be the same every time. With the tension you’re putting on the hair, you could think your only trimming the ends and in reality, take off much more than anticipated. After doing the curl by curl cut, we then wash, detangle, and style the hair at the bowl using very select products. We focus on using water soluble products for the hair, to not leave any build up. We want product that is able to absorb in the hair, versus sitting on top of the hair. Then allow the hair to dry either using a hood dryer or diffuser. It’s so rewarding to see people who are new to wearing their natural texture embrace their hair.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think that Capella Salon is a pioneer in the hair industry as I’m seeing so many more people with their natural hair represented in media, and even just walking down the street! I think a lot more hair stylists will start to do more training in curly hair, and I hope that it will be taught more in school.
