Today we’d like to introduce you to Campbell Dunn.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My story starts with an Xbox and Adobe After Effects. From a young age, I created my own business where videogamers would send me their favorite Call of Duty highlights, and I would create montages with visually appealing effects. I would spend hours watching YouTube tutorials, working in Adobe After Effects, and learning from the best Call of Duty editors in the community.
Growing up in Nashville, Tennessee, I was a die-hard Tennessee Titans fan. My dad and I went to every single game year in and out. I always dreamed of one day working for a football team and creating video edits for them. This passion drove me to apply for the Media Director position for the University of Arizona’s Student Section, the ZonaZoo. I remember my overwhelming excitement and nervousness of shooting my first Arizona Football game. The thrill of being on the field was like nothing I had ever experienced before.
After working with the ZonaZoo for a year, I was hired by the MLB to work for the Padres in San Diego. However, since I was still in school, I had to skip a lot of my classes and fly back and forth between San Diego and Tucson. I would be in early morning classes in Arizona and on the field taking photos in San Diego at night. I was very happy in San Diego, but ever since I was a kid, I had always dreamed of living in LA.
My dream became a reality when I was hired by the MLB as the Live Content Coordinator for the Dodgers this year. This city has always called to me, and I am so excited to have the opportunity to live here. On top of that, I get to be apart of one of the best baseball teams in the MLB, the Dodgers. I work closely with the Dodger’s social media team and get to take photos of the players up close and personal. This year has been jam-packed with walk-off home runs, historic record-breaking achievements, and even earthquakes.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a Live Content Coordinator using photography, videography, and video editing to capture exciting, memorable, and original live social media content during each baseball game for the home and away teams and the MLB. Something that people should know about the content that we produce is that everything we produce is live. That means we have to take, download, edit and distribute our content over the course of the game. Over the course of a game, I will produce roughly 60-100 pieces of content live, whether that be photographs, videos, GIFs, or video edits.
Another thing that people should understand about Sports Content Creation is the many different angles, perspectives, settings, and cameras that all work together to create a single piece of content. In addition, I work alongside some of the best Sports Photographers in the country, people who work for Getty, AP, etc. I have the opportunity to learn from the best Content Creators in the industry.
I draw my inspiration from my mom. My mom is a graphic designer, and my whole life, I have looked up to her for inspiration and creative guidance. She has always encouraged me to follow my dreams and do what makes me happy, to follow my bliss.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
If you are a Content Creator, sign up for as many gigs, games, or events as you can. These are great for developing your creative craft along with the ability to meet other people who do similar creative work. Developing relationships with other creatives is extremely helpful in learning and getting more opportunities in the field. Talk to as many creative people as you can. All it takes is for one person to recognize you and to see your creative talents in action.
Another tip I would have is to designate a piece of your day to improve your creative craft. For me, I spend about an hour a day searching YouTube for tutorials and other useful information to help me learn and develop my creative skills. Through watching these tutorials, I have been able to teach myself Adobe After Effects, Premiere, Lightroom, Bridge, and more, which have all been extremely crucial in getting me to where I am now. Additionally, by targeting your specific creative niche audience on YouTube (After Effects Tutorials, etc.), you can find other creatives like yourself who you can teach and inspire you.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
