Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille McLucas.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m born and raised in St. Louis, MO, and that is where I fell in love with performing arts. People don’t know I started singing first at the age of four (thanks to my mama, lol!) Oh my gosh I use to love singing in church, school, home, the car anywhere. I would watch Whitney Houston and baby you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t her offspring, okay? I mean… gosh I love that woman!
After falling in love with singing, I started to really grow fond of dancing. Recording videos on VHS and learning the choreography is one of my favorite memories from childhood. As a kid, I became very involved in the performing arts in school from musical theater to dance and choir. Being on stage performing was and still is my happy place.
In college, I studied dance and received my Bachelor’s degree from Columbia College Chicago. After graduating, I moved to L.A. to become a professional dancer, and I’ve been very blessed with my career in dance. Touring overseas and in the states, performing on The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno, The Jimmy Kimmel show & @Midnight w/ Chris Hardwick just to name a few.
Dancing for different artists and on shows is great but I was really looking forward to taking my career to the next level, so I started looking into acting classes. After an extensive search, I found my home with Breakin’ Through acting workshop led by Choice Skinner (special thanks to Brandon Sanders for the recommendation.) Since joining the class, I have grown so much as an actress, and I’m excited for the road ahead.
Please tell us about your art.
I am an actress & I want to change people’s lives. I want to impact the lives of people I’ve never met before. I want people to say because of you I went after my dreams, achieved that goal and because you never quit, that lit a fire in me to never give up. I want to inspire the masses to keep going no matter the hardships, the let downs & dark times know that you’re enough & God created you, so you are special. Never forget that.
Through my acting, I want to humanize characters that people may not understand and tell the stories of characters that deserve to be heard. As an actress, I love holding myself accountable for telling their story and using my instrument to allow the character to have a voice. Every character I play I want people to relate to her and make me feel something that is my objective. I truly enjoy bringing life to the characters I play and giving my all to each and every scene.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The role of artists has definitely changed and is more impactful now with social media than ever before, in my opinion. People expect artists to use their voice for the greater good and to speak up for those who don’t have the same platform as us.
Local, national or international events & issues affect my art tremendously. What is going on this world can not be ignored; it affects all of us even if we don’t want it to. It has inspired me to be a part of more projects dealing with social issues that are not the easiest to talk about or deal with. Content that confronts social injustice, racism, stereotypes, politics, etc. head on and will make the viewer think and hopefully see and learn a different perspective.
We are all here to grow and learn from each other so educating one another and showing empathy to others is how these world issues affect my art. Instead of judging and criticizing let me learn and ask questions if there is something I don’t understand.
Empathy heavily impacts my abilities as an actor.
