Meet Camara Aunique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Camara Aunique.

Camara Aunique helps is an award-winning celebrity makeup artist, instructor, and coach who has quickly risen to become one of our nation’s most sought-after beauty experts. With over ten years in the industry, more than seven spent freelancing, Camara’s work has graced countless red carpets, editorials, and beauty campaigns. Her client list includes the likes of Angela Bassett, Ava DuVernay, June Ambrose, Naturi Naughton, Lisa Price, Rapsody, Garcelle Beauvais, Lil Rel Howery, Jocko Sims, Tarana Burke, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jenifer Lewis, Dr. Cindy Trimm, Priscilla Shirer and the list goes on. Her artistry has graced the runway stages of designers Kate Spade, Reed Krakoff, and Kenneth Cole, various TV specials, and social media channels across the world. In 2018 she launched Camara AUnique Beauty, featuring her handcrafted faux mink lashes, receiving Essence Magazine’s 2020 Best in Black Beauty Award. She attributes every success to God’s grace, demonstrating the power of hard work and unshakable faith.

Influenced by the fast pace of New York’s fashion, beauty, and entertainment sectors, where she got her start, Camara’s incomparable work ethic stems from a lifelong admiration of her grandmother, who stopped at nothing to provide for her family. As a Brooklyn native, Camara witnessed the bright and dark sides of the city’s rapid development firsthand. Through her philanthropic efforts, she has helped to equip New Yorkers with the tools needed to access the many resources and opportunities her hometown has to offer. Camara lives by the motto, “I want to be too young people who I needed growing up.” With a name like hers, some might say she was born to help others.

Whether it’s empowering young women, supporting cancer survivors with natural-feeling lashes, teaching makeup courses, or making time to help novice beauty entrepreneurs and artists navigate the industry, Camara seamlessly blends her faith, expertise, and love for people in all she does. She currently serves on the YMCA McBurney Board of Managers and as the Diversity in Makeup Educator for Glamsquad, where she teaches other artists how to properly apply makeup on women of color and win.

Combining her talents in beauty coupled with her passion for ministry, her clients experience the spa each time they are under her brush, leaving more empowered, more inspired, and more relaxed with each stroke. The Camara Aunique experience is one to be remembered, blending artistry, relaxation, and quality to ensure her clients receive the very best, every time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’m a survivor/ thriver of domestic violence which almost made me give up makeup but I kept going I knew there was something I needed to learn and trust the process, for the first five years of my freelance career I could barely survive but I learned how to push through and I grew as an artist.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am the founder of Camara Aunique beauty I started it last year 2019 I wanted to create a lash line for everyday women to feel beautiful and not something that would take away from their beauty but add to it. I also wanted to touch women who were often forgotten about the women who lost their lashes due to alopecia and cancer

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God deserves the credit, he has kept my mind sane and kept me pushing to grow the many times I was told I wasn’t a good artist I still trusted what God told me, of course I had some great people speak life into me and push me which I know they were sent by him but in my quiet time its been all Jesus who has pushed me through.
