Today we’d like to introduce you to Lishabai Yi.
Lishabai, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a photographer from Harbin, China. I live and work in New York City and Los Angeles now. I have been studying photography for 6 years. For the first 4 years, I studied Commercial and Advertising photography in Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, then came to America to study digital photography and videography at the New York Film Academy and graduated in Los Angeles in 2014. I was trying to find my style and kept trying new works. Over almost 3 years I found a way to combine Western culture and Eastern culture in a modern way, and balance creative personal projects with editorial fashion. And my friends and I made a studio in New York and Los Angeles. Our services cover all the United States. So far, I have worked with Vogue, ELLE, ELLEMEN, PAPER MAGAZINE, SELF CHINA, etc.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was not a smooth road，I almost gave up several times. But every time I always met different friends who helped me solve these problems. I really really appreciate these friends.
When you look back, what are you most proud of?
When I decided to build a photography studio with my friend in New York. We made our own project ‘Landing in New York’ which is a series of artists stories documentary videos. From this project, I understood what a good story is and what true art is.
Every story has ups and downs. What were some of the downs others might not be aware of?
When I just graduated I really lost myself and I didn’t know which way was the right way I need go in the future. And the first three months I only earned 900 dollars and that’s not even enough to cover one month of rent. But I kept doing photography no matter how difficult it was and life going better and better. More people know me and know my work.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
Los Angeles is a really beautiful and nice place to start up. It has more opportunities because of Hollywood. Start ups can meet different people and a variety of of challenges.
