Today, we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Burk.
Bryan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally from Texas, I began getting tattoos and tattooing myself in the late 90’s while living in New York City.
In December 1998, I moved to Los Angeles to begin formally learning tattooing with Bob and Charlie Roberts at Spotlight Tattoo. I became Bob’s apprentice and worked there for 11 years until 2009.
In 2010, I opened Dark Horse Tattoo with Adam Warmerdam, where we continue to work to this day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Tattooing, by its nature, is a challenge. The dynamic nature of creating a piece of art on a living person that will last and look beautiful for the rest of their life is a tall order.
That being said, it’s extremely rewarding when the client is happy with the work and the results meet the expectations of both the customer and myself as the artist.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
25 years into my tattooing career, I’m most known for bold and colorful American Traditional tattooing and Japanese-style body suit tattooing. I’d say I do about a 50/50 mix of these two.
What I’m most proud of, and what sets myself and my studio apart from other local tattoo shops, is the stylish and bold work we create. We’re known for dynamic, bright, full custom work with a modern and detailed yet very classic look. I think potential customers who look at our website will immediately be able to see this difference.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
I’d say spending time with my son, my fiancee, and my mother is probably the most important thing in my life.
After that, the need to stay busy in creative endeavors is what makes me tick.
