Meet Brittany Bush of Yarrow Events in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Bush.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up for me was different than any of my friends and peers. I grew up in my grandparent’s home which was a quintessential hoarder home. Making my bedroom my very own creative oasis- an escape if you will. Having grown up in this environment, I always used my room as a way to express myself creatively as well as get out the frustration of my surroundings. It was at a very young age that my dad could see I loved design. Upon graduating high school, I really had no idea what I wanted to do. I had no plans of college & no real motivation to even find out. My dad mentioned that FIDM might be a good place for me to expand on my love for design. With no other direction, I decided to apply. Once I was accepted, it really opened up a new hope for my future. It was during my time at FIDM while studying Visual Communications that I began doing weddings for friends. I was interning on the design team at Anthropologie as well and gaining so much knowledge in the industry. (If I had to give anyone needing advice in this field, it’s learning how to use power tools.)

Upon graduating, it was finally time to jump into the workforce. I began working at Free People as a Visual Manager. I honestly can’t believe they hired me even to this day- I had no idea what I was doing. It was my first job outside of the service industry! I jumped around quite a bit in different corporate companies. I landed my favorite job as the Visual Supervisor for Opening Ceremony, working with some of the most amazing fashion designers, musicians and actors for over three years. I ultimately knew that if I didn’t feel completely fulfilled working for such a wonderful company, that my calling was to work for myself. It was also during this time that my mother passed away & I was seeking new outlets in life altogether. My dad, also a business owner, encouraged me to start my own business. This is where I finally decided to start Yarrow Events. Yarrow started in my backyard in 2018. It has since become something so much more than I ever expected. Within my two years of operation, my work has been featured at the launch of Kendall Jenner’s “Moon” party, on BHLDN, hosting workshops with companies like P.F. Candle Co and Prism Boutique.

I had my first full-circle moment when my work was featured at two launch parties for Anthropolgie’s upcoming collections. From an intern to a featured artist at not only Anthro but their sister company BHLDN. My main focus is wedding coordination, flower design and charcuterie spreads. The outbreak of COVID had since put a damper on events altogether, but I still strive to keep Yarrow going every day in different ways. Continuing to collaborate with artists & make a footprint in this industry. I am NEVER above making mistakes and I am constantly learning. Being creative isn’t just what brings me joy, it is who I am. I truly can’t wait to see where this business takes me and who I meet along the way.

Has it been a smooth road?
100%, absolutely smooth, no issues whatsoever. Lol, can you sense the sarcasm? No, wow where do I even begin. Honestly, the hardest part of being a business owner is THE BUSINESS PART. I went into a creative business so I wouldn’t have to deal with analytics, reporting and budgeting, but it is very much a part of running a business. In fact, MOST of it is office work. That being said, I’ve had a lot of research to do, figuring out how to legally operate this type of business and all the boring stuff. If you are looking into starting your own business, don’t let this part get discouraging! If I can do it, for sure anyone can.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Yarrow Events story. Tell us more about the business.
Yarrow originated as a wedding design company, which it still very much is- I’ve just expanded to all types of events. I specialize in floral design, wedding coordination and charcuterie spreads. The charcuterie spreads were an added bonus my second year into operation. Every year at our family Christmas party, I was asked to put together a large spread for appetizers. They became such a hit from posting on IG that people started to ask if I offered them as a service. Charcuterie has become one of the largest parts of my business at this point. As it has become more widely popular across the board, I find it has worked out in my benefit to have started it when I did. It’s become an integral part of Yarrow and it’s one of the things I’m most proud of building up.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Man…if you would’ve asked me this question at the beginning of March, my answer would be completely different. With COVID widely affecting the event industry, it’s honestly hard to say. I think, much like a lot of other industries during this time, we will see a new version of what these areas will look like. Events may not be what they’ve been, but that will leave room for new, creative ideas to surface. Right now, we are all being forced to learn and step out of our comfort zones, which ultimately is where we grow.
