Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Brown.
Brittany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It seems like from the get-go my life should have been taken away from me. To start, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my grandparents. My grandparents, mother, aunt’s, and uncles all escaped from the Cambodian genocide in the 70’s. If it wasn’t for them fighting for their life, I wouldn’t have mine. Fast forward 20ish years and I’m a year old with 28 tumors in my throat. The doctor told my parents if I didn’t get surgery I wouldn’t make it to my next birthday. So, here I am 24 years old. I am present. So to get the ball rolling a bit, I moved to California in 2014 from a small town in Illinois. I was born in California but was raised in a very small town, Grayslake. My parents got a divorce when I was in middle school which led my mother to leave and move back to California. She took my little sister with her and I rarely got to see or talk to them. With that being said, I grew up with my dad most of my life. Being that I lived in such a small town, we all had the tendency to get into trouble.
One day, my dad and I had enough of that small little town and decided to move to California. We drove across the country and did not even know where we would live. Once we got there I eventually stayed with my mom and my dad stayed with my aunt until he found a place to live. My mom and I were never close. I am half Cambodian and she is the definition of a tiger mom. She loves you but show it with some tough love. I stayed with her for about a year and during that time I had no job and did not go to school. Out of state tuition was extremely expensive so. I decided to wait until I considered instate. During those boring days, I found myself feeling insecure. I did not care about my body and sure as hell did not take care of my mental health. Long story short, I started introducing health and fitness into my life. Which completely changed the way I looked and thought. I started growing a passion on learning how amazing the body is when you take good care of it.
In 2017, I found the gym Elev8 Performance. I have heard of Katrina Fischer the owner, who has thousands of followers. I emailed her and had no idea what I wanted to do there but I knew I just had to be there. I offered to work front desk but she did not have any positions open. She replied and told me the only thing I could do is be her intern and help her work the back end of things. Of course, I said heck yes. While being an intern for a few months she saw a spark in me that I really did not see in myself. She had me teach bootcamp classes and eventually I started getting good at it and received really great feedback. I’ve been a personal trainer since then and love every minute of it. I love helping others and making them feel good. I’ve been asked before what I feel like my purpose in life is, and I know its helping people. I went from intern to trainer, and just six months ago, I became the manager. To say that my life has had its up and downs is an understatement. I am only 24 years old and I can’t wait to see what else my future holds.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A lot of the struggles I faced along the way was not believing myself and being surrounded by people who didn’t follow the path I wanted to be on.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Elev8 Performance – what should we know?
Elev8 Performance is a health and wellness center. I say that because its more than just a gym and were all more than just trainers. Were there to be your family and do not want to just take you to your next physical level. Were for your mental health as well. Our bootcamp and semi-private classes are what we are known for and having that family like closeness with all of our clients.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that being a good listener is something I am good at. I notice that people have the tendency even without knowing me to spill their heart out or just rant about their bad day. I am all ears and love giving advice if it’s needed.
