Today we’d like to introduce you to Britanni Johnson.
Britanni, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been someone who likes to peek over the horizon but I would’ve never ever imagined being where I am today. Especially in college where his all happened… I was attending Texas Christian University and pursuing a degree in political science. I worked for Red Bull and interned for the NFL super bowl host committee. I just liked to keep myself busy and was always dabbling in something that seemed like a good opportunity at the time. My sophomore year, I auditioned for a video game that would change my life. At the time, I had no idea how big it would become or the direction it would catapult me into. The game was Borderlands and I was one of the main characters in the game. I would go to the studio after classes and we filmed it during my spring break. We filmed the sequel the fall after my senior year, and at this point I had decided maybe law school wasn’t for me or…at least it can wait. So I moved to LA before the release of the game and never looked back.
I fell in love with Los Angeles, and this really was where you needed to be if you wanted to be talent and in the gaming industry. I never had really focused on acting or anything like that so I spent a lot of time really growing and learning, but above all else I looked at it like a business. I also couldn’t sit still and play the waiting game that is auditioning and waiting for the phone call. So I started consulting and working for different companies as I was traveling alot to different gaming events and making endless connections. Eventually, I kept working myself up, working in different facets of the industry and learned almost every angle that I could. I still do on camera and voice-over work, I’ve traveled the world hosting and working on different productions but I was always continued to do this and maintain my career. Everyone would always say “you have to pick one” and I always pushed back and thought – why is it so black and white. I’m young and I’m excited to experience and learn. If I can do it all I will.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not always. There has been many times where I’ve thought… Am I on the right path? What if I had just focused on this one thing instead however many years ago. But living in the state of “what if” is such an unhealthy place. I am proud of my path, the reputation, and experience I’ve had.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
People know me best as being a personality in the gaming and esports world. I have been in the industry for about ten years now and have met so many amazing people along the way. Whether I’m recognized from my work in the Borderlands series, a few other games, different shows I’ve guest-hosted on, award shows, or an event that you’ve been to – I’m always working on something. I am often speaking on panels about creators, content creation, influencer marketing, and women in gaming and leadership roles. I am the Head of Creators for G2 Esports, one of the largest and most winningest organizations in the world. I work on strategy, recruitment, and bringing new opportunities for G2 talent. What has set me apart is my experience, my knowledge about the industry, my ability to look ahead, and pulse on the community.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not have seen as much of the world if I had done anything differently, I wouldn’t trade a thing.
