Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Kaminski.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I moved out to Los Angeles from Arizona around 15 years ago to be a freelance hairstylist. I had dabbled a bit in photography back in Phoenix and asked one of my best friends was an agent if he had any girls that might be interested in being photographed. So he sent me some girls, I’d do their hair, the girls would do their own makeup and then we’d commence to shoot. After a while, I got tired of doing hair and just focused solely on photography.
I’ve always been a huge people watcher…seeing how individuals would natural stand on the street while also taking note of light and shadow. I just took what I saw in person and translated this behind the camera. Fortunately, it seems to be working.
Has it been a smooth road?
Life adjustments always come up and things change. I had to step away from photography for a few years. But when I returned, I had fresh perspective and the ability to acquire some of the best gear in the business. What may have seemed to be a struggle in the past turned out to be an asset in the present.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I often hear my photography reflects the aesthetic of the 1950’s and 60’s. I’m definitely influenced by mid-century design as well as the assignment photographers of this era; from Louise Dahl-Wolfe’s effortless composition and lighting in her editorials for Harper’s Bazaar to Mark Shaw’s portraits of the Kennedy’s to the beefcake portraiture from photographer Bob Mizer pushing censorship boundaries with AMG.
I like to keep my setups simple using natural light whenever possible. Focusing on composition, light and shadow all while developing the emotion of the moment and building trust with my subject.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
With Covid-19, we will see shifts in just about every facet of our lives. I’m not sure how photography will develop after the pandemic begins to taper off and hopefully end.
For myself, I’m focusing on new ways of sharing work. Print-on-demand is intriguing to me. Printing more of my uncensored work but in a printed format. I feel that sharing work online isn’t special anymore. I want my work to feel special.
