Today we’d like to introduce you to Bre’Lynn Lombard.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Given to our founder in the form of a spiritual vision to create spaces of empathy, criticality and innovation. UnJaded Curations is founded on the belief that we must “Create what should exist”.
We are a creative house focused on curating and producing arts experiences that center the varied intersecting identities of Black womxn. We push boundaries on formal art experiences by inviting viewers to become active participants in creating and experiencing art right in the viewing spaces.
Like the Lotus, representing enlightenment, resilience and beauty; UnJaded experiences spark the intellect and morality of participants through artists-viewer group collaborations in curated installations, portraits, photographs and movement works.
Our goal is to use art as a form of social action, to amplify identifying womxn artists of color to decode hidden narratives and value new voices by curating tangible experiences that change how we look at art and the world around us.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, no, no, no, no, no. *Destiney Child’s voice*! The road has been similar to the floors described in Langston Hughes’ “Mother to Son”; our road to funding has come torn up and sometimes with large holes. “Creating what should exist” means you have to get innovative, get savvy with your resources and push your limits. Creating experiences are very costly, they require gallery space and materials to bring the immersive experience to life. If we are using technologies, we have to make sure that we have devices present which comes with a very big bag. Finding consistent grants, fundraising activities and sponsors is a marathon; take the race in stride, find a pace and running partner the journey is far better with your team.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I actually just made a career transition!
I am a former U.S. history teacher and curriculum designer who integrated art mediums and creative technologies into U.S. history. The goal here was very similar to the goal of UnJaded Curations, to build student empathy, critical thinking and innovation skills. The world is turned upside down because current curriculum supports European imperial thinking.
My goal was to expose students to “interventionary” historical narratives through mediums that would humanize their identities and connect them to the identities of others, exposing our future leaders to the ways in which we are connected and areas in which we can and should be responsible with our privileges. What better way to do that than through visual mediums and technology? Two fields that are developmentally appropriate and responsive to young learners. I was able to test my hypothesis as a Fulbright grantee in Malaysia and ground my practice in scholarship at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, where I received my master’s in 2018.
Now I take my understanding of youth development and issues they face to develop trust and safety policies for TikTok.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Be patient with yourself and rest. It is so easy to get caught up in the hype of entrepreneurship and “creatorship” but resting and filling yourself up will get you closer to the goal. Build a circle that is pure, your energy is precious and your goal rests on your ability to tap into your true self, to feel your energy and put that into your craft, you can’t do that if you have leeches draining you.
