Meet BreeKay

Today we’d like to introduce you to BreeKay.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Orange County, California. My mom had me start singing in church at age 3, and soon after, my parents gave me the cutest light-up keyboard for Christmas. With that keyboard, I began learning to play melodies and write songs. Fast forward a few years, and my dad gave me a bigger keyboard, and after years of writing songs, he gave me the biggest keyboard I ever received–the Korg Triton Extreme Music Workstation for Christmas. With that piece of equipment, I began making beats as a teenager. After high school, I went to the University of Hawaii fully convinced that I would be going on to attend law school, but purpose caught up to me. I continued writing, recording, and producing music in my dorm room, finished my degree requirements, minored in music, and came back to California as fast as I could. Since then, I partnered with my cousin and best friend, Kasairi, to form the duo “BreeKay x Kasairi” for which I produce all of the music. I also, in early 2019, started my beat-selling and leasing business called These Are The Sounds. I’m now an artist, producer, songwriter, and business-owner, and the rest is history.

Please tell us about your art.
I write and produce songs from an honest perspective. Whether people can relate to the subject matter, or whether the song presents the listener with a different perspective than they’ve had, my hope is always that my songs make people feel and think, period. I’m a sucker for a good art, and I like to think that my listeners are as well.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
When it comes to finances as an artist, I prioritize and budget like crazy. This means if going to the grocery store and buying food to make and take with me is more cost effective than eating out, I’ll do it. If I must go years without buying a pair of shoes and instead clean the ones I have to keep them looking new, I’ll do it. If I have to skip going somewhere with friends to save money for mixing and mastering or for a photo or video shoot, I will stay home. If I have to continue going without subscribing to any movie or TV streaming services because having my own website is the higher priority for my art, then that’s what I’ll do. I also sometimes read books (like “The Richest Man in Babylon” and “100 Secrets to Success”) or watch YouTube channels (like Minority Mindset) about money. One of the principles I’ve come away with is, “earn as much as you can, save as much as you can, give as much as you can.” I work a regular job and run a business, and from these two resources as well as side hustles (like reselling), I do just that. I set aside money for what I need as well as for savings and for giving to others. I believe in the principles of sowing and reaping, meaning that when I help and give to others, I believe that it comes back to me, and in all honesty, it always does. To get your finances in order as an artist takes discipline, and it’s not sexy. But discipline leads to me not worrying about money, which in turn leads to me being in a better mental state to be able to create my best art.
