Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Miller.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Bree. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started baking as a hobby ten years ago while I was in college, studying kinesiology, something COMPLETELY different than baking. Ive always been super creative and “artsy” I just never knew I could use it to build a career out of! I am 100% self-taught when it comes to baking, I taught myself how to decorate cakes by watching countless YouTube videos & by mimicking what I saw on shows like “the cake boss” or “ace of cakes.”
Long story short, I took a major leap of faith, dropped out of school my senior year (I know, crazy right?!) and jumped right into baking full time and started “BUILDING MY BRAND” it wasn’t long after that that I booked my first celebrity client, Rapper, The Game. I had the privilege of making his birthday cake, and as soon as he posted it on social media, my following jumped from 300 to 6000 overnight!
It was at that point that helped me start my business because I started to get noticed more. That was approx. six years ago, since then, ive focused on building my clientele & creating over the top creative cakes! We officially launch Bree’s Cakes as an online bakery in August 2014, where I shared kitchen space with other chefs & baked from home which didn’t come without its own difficulties & obstacles.
During that time, my client list skyrocketed & my celebrity client list began to grow incredibly fast! Since then, we’ve baked for major celebrities including, Chrissy Teigen & John Legend, the Kardashians, Kevin Hart, Floyd Mayweather, Kehlani, Tyra Banks, Ryan Seacrest, etc.
Fast forward four years, we finally opened our first brick & mortar! Although having our bakery has always been the end goal, this is just the beginning for us!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Anyone that says opening their own business is easy is lying! You have to make a lot of sacrifices! Sacrifices from your family, social life, & so much more.
I think some of the biggest struggles is juggling personal time & family time because my family means the world to me so making sure I give them time and attention along with running my business is super important to me.
Another struggle is the fear of the unknown & not getting a “regular paycheck” I have literally poured every penny I have into making my dream a reality & it has been difficult at times, but I wouldn’t change it for the life of me.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bree’s Cakes – what should we know?
Bree’s Cakes specializes in 1 of a kind custom cakes! We love making realistic cakes that make our clients do a double take like “THATS A CAKE?!”
We are mostly known for our large celebrity clientele & super detailed cakes. What makes me most proud about my company is that It is family driven so I get to work alongside my mom, dad, brothers, boyfriend and now my 4-month-old daughter! Getting to take her to work with me every day has given this Dream of mine a whole new meaning!
I would say what sets us apart from most bakeries would be our attention to detail & our world famous SOUL CUPCAKES! Which is a savory cupcake made of cornbread stuffed with Mac n cheese topped with mashed potatoes, gravy, and fried chicken! We also have a cake version! I think it’s super important to find something that makes you stand out from every other “cupcake shop” in LA and I think we do a good job at that.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would say my family 100% deserves all the credit. Without the countless hours, they have all put into my business I wouldn’t be where I am today!
My mom, Becky specifically known to everyone on Instagram as “MAMA CAKES” is my go-to for everything! She helps with errands, deliveries, in the kitchen, in the storefront, etc. she is my rock. My boyfriend Mel helps with supply shopping, deliveries, & helps keep the shop organized/clean.
Pops, my dad Frank is always in and out of the shop making sure everything is running correctly, he’s my go-to for any shop issues because he has solutions for everything! My brothers jump in whenever I need their help making custom cake boards (because I suck at power tools) or extra hands at the shop when I need to step out.
They have all sacrificed so much for me to live my dream and for that, I’m forever grateful.
