Today we’d like to introduce you to Branka Knezevic
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m originally from Serbia, and my childhood was spent moving internationally across three continents. By the time I graduated high school, I had lived in several countries, including Serbia, the US, Iraq, Switzerland, and spent extensive time in Italy with my family. After finishing high school in Long Island, NY, I pursued my architecture doctorate in Hawaii. Hawaii was a transformative place for me—I became an adult there. I stayed for several years, working for a large architecture firm before moving to Los Angeles in 2010. LA brought new opportunities: I started my family and, after working for other firms, launched my own in 2016. This period coincided with my divorce, but it was ultimately a pivotal moment where my life opened up in many ways. My firm, Plana, has been involved in diverse and exciting projects—from designing schools and clinics to chic attorney offices and innovative interior spaces. Alongside Plana, I run a podcast called Dope Designer Club, which focuses on creativity and entrepreneurship. I’m passionate about sharing my experiences and teaching courses not only about architecture but also professional and personal development, sustainability, and business growth.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a completely smooth road, and honestly, I wouldn’t want it any other way. The struggles are where you learn the most. Moving around frequently as a child, always being the new kid, was challenging but ultimately taught me how to be comfortable in unfamiliar situations. Starting my own firm was a huge risk—I had to quit my job to create something that aligned with my values. It wasn’t easy, but I wanted more creative control, better financial outcomes, and the ability to choose my mentors, who now are often my clients. Balancing family life, especially after my divorce, while growing my business was tough, but the flexibility of owning my firm allowed me to spend more time with my daughter, which is one of the greatest rewards.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Plana Architects?
At Plana, we specialize in architecture and interior design across diverse industries—from educational institutions and healthcare facilities to high-end commercial spaces. What sets us apart is our commitment to sustainability and innovative design. We don’t just follow trends; we create environments that are not only aesthetically beautiful but also functional and eco-conscious. I’m proud that we offer something for both local and international clients, and that Plana isn’t just about design—it’s about building a lifestyle of wellness and sustainability. Alongside Plana, I’ve created Dope Designer Club, a platform where I interview entrepreneurs and creatives about their journeys. Through the podcast and courses I offer, I aim to inspire others to take bold steps in their careers and personal lives.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories is spending summers with my family in Italy. Those moments were filled with joy, learning, and an appreciation for art, culture, and nature, which have all influenced me as a person and as a designer. It was in Italy that I first developed my love for architecture, wandering through the streets of old towns and admiring the beautiful buildings and landscapes.
