Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Bibbins.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brandon. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I first started to got my start with photography in 2011. This was strictly as a way to document road trips with my teammates and show our friends and family how much fun we were having. There were definitely more videos than photos of us being typical college goofing around as we traveled for basketball games.
The thing I fell in love with was how I could tell a story through photos. That joy and passion led me to pursue how to become a better storyteller and photographer. Countless videos on youtube learning lighting, functions of a camera, composition, etc. opened my eyes to another world.
That same year, my college basketball teammate asked me to photograph his wedding. I immediately said no because I had 0 experience. The last thing I’d want to do is mess up my teammate’s wedding (who happens to be 6’8 240lbs of muscle).
After assuring me he had faith I could deliver some great work and confirming that his soon to be fiance wanted this as well, I took a leap of faith and photographed the wedding. Not wanting to let me, teammate, down I studied and contacted every wedding photographer I knew to get tips and learn the industr.
This was the start of my career. The wedding went surprisingly well, and I was able to book six more weddings off of those photos alone. Almost seven years later with over 120 weddings under my belt, it was that moment that changed my life.
I’ve had the honor to have my work featured in The Knot, How He Asked, Black Tux, The Hollywood Reporter, Marthastewart.com, foodandwine.com, and others. It has been a great ride, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were definitely some struggles. I majored in Information Technology in college, and I worked as an IT Technician/IT manager for the LA County Sheriffs Department, David & Goliath Advertising Agency, and DRINKS while shooting 30+ weddings a year.
Having a full-time job, but also doing weddings in a full-time capacity was extremely challenging. 80=90 hour work weeks would turn into a normal thing, but the work was always worth it. I loved what I was doing in both fields.
Time management, an amazing support system, working out/eating healthy, and a desire to avoid complacency made this doable.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a wedding, lifestyle, and aerial photographer that visually captures the joy, intimacy, and raw emotions that will be cherished for a lifetime. I am most proud about developing relationships with my clients and seeing them return year after year for more photos.
It is a joy to see clients grow (especially the ones with families), throughout their lives. I have a few clients that I’ve photographed from their engagement session all the way to their first born. That may be the thing that sets me apart is that I strive to develop a personal relationship with all of my clients.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
There has been a lot of good luck or good karma, however, you want to put it. There have been plenty of situations where I have been in the right place at the right time. For example, I was able to land the director of Crazy Rich Asians wedding Jon Chu from doing a photo shoot of his new wife and daughter.
A designer I have done work with, Bree Jacoby, asked me to do a shoot of one of her clients. This client happened to be Kristin Hodge (now Chu). We did an in-home styling shoot and was able to capture photos of her and her daughter. The shots came out great!
Ironically they were getting married in a few months and didn’t have a photographer. They asked me to photograph their wedding in Napa, and it was definitely one of my favorite weddings of all time.
