Meet Brandi Diaz of Maverick Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Diaz.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My like for photograph’s started pretty young, I just hadn’t realized it at the time. When I was younger, I’d carry around disposable camera’s and just shoot whatever I wanted to remember. Then in high school, I finally got my own point and shoot, and I’d take it everywhere. Literally everywhere I was, I’d have my little camera in my purse.

My sophomore year of high school I’d been introduced to the rave scene. The scene was much smaller then, and there were also several photographers you’d be guaranteed to find throughout the night, some of which I’d become friends with over time. I’d like to think it was around this time a little seed was planted, and I’d realized photography was something you could pursue as a job. Fast-forward to my senior year of HS, I’d taken my first photo class, and the more I learned, the more I wanted to know. I eventually decided to pursue photography in college, and the rest is history.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been far from easy. I’m still pretty new to the business so there are plenty of obstacles I’m facing and will continue to face everyday. Unfortunately, I feel like while it is enjoyed by the masses, art is not widely respected as a full-time job, so you have times where you’re going to have people question your price or try to underpay you or haggle with you, so it’s really important to know your worth and be confident in your work. They don’t realize how much time and effort it takes to get a project done, you wear a lot of hats in an industry like this.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Maverick Photography – what should we know?
My specialty is environmental portraiture. I really like to shine the spotlight on all things odd and beautiful. Growing up I’ve always had a love for the unordinary- people, things, and places. I was a huge bookworm and had a background in theatre, so I love story-telling and fantasy. If it’s unsettling or grim or weird, it’s right up my alley. My work gives me the ability to create characters in a world of my own. And since I’m the ultimate version of an introvert, I like to use my work as a visual reference for the things that I’m feeling and what’s going in on my head.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Resilience. Tough times are a given, but it’s your ability to problem solve and bounce back that really measures how far you’re willing to go to get to the next level.

Thank you for this article! As much as we think we know everything about someone closest to us, another piece of the puzzle comes to life. It’s these little open doors that make us understand a tad more. This article was a delightful surprise, and a little more special to me, see I’m this precious young ladies mom. I’ve always been proud of her unique outside the box kind of a girl. Where she keeps me speechless and thinking “where does she get this from?” I’m extremely proud of Brandi! Again a special thank from her brother, Michael and I.
